For some reason I've always been curious about Fred Mertz favorite expression "Oh, for corn's sake!". I have never ever seen or heard this expression used anywhere else on any show or movie of the time. Does anyone know if this was a pet expression of William Frawley's that he worked into his proformance, or perhaps just a phrase the writers came up with for Fred so he could sound like he was cursing when he really wasn't, or if it indeed WAS a popular (or at least an existing) phrase of the 50s?

This was the catch phrase of Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve' nephew Leroy on the 1940's radio show The Great Gildersleeve, a spin-off of Fibber McGee and Molly. So it was in use prior to Fred Mertz
