I know that Vivian Vance hated William Frawley off camera, but did this last during the entire series run or did they make up.

I think Viv and Bill had a love/hate relationship. They weren't each others favorite person, but they tolerated each other. This lasted the entire run of the show. After I Love Lucy had ended, Vivian was asked to do a spin-off series with Bill, Bill agreed, but Vivian turned them down.

Vivian and William Frawley did get along at first, but when William over heard Vivian telling the producers that she did not want a old man to play her husband, he was offended and upset, and started calling her bad things. I got this information from the E True Hollywood Story on I Love Lucy.

Makes me respect them as actors though...I never would have guessed that all of this conflict existed in real life. Crazyness...

I think their relationship off screen helped them portray the Mertzes on screen, because we all no the Mertzes weren't lovey-dovey.

What may have helped was their ages. Vivian was 34 and Bill was 64!

It's also known that William Frawley hated Vivian Vance's singing voice, whenever they had to sing together he'd complain that she was ruining the song and the scene.  Personally I think if it wasn't for Vivian's voice, their little ditties would have been intolerable with William Frawley singing solos.

I heard it just like another reviewer. The hate did not start until William Frawly overheard Vivian Vance tell someone that just because Lucy and Desi were really married that why would people think that she would marry such and old ugly man. I guess a lot of people assumed because Lucy and Desi were married in real life that there were also.

I don't know if anyone thought they were married in real life, she was just insulted because she actually was a former beauty queen and was cast to marry someone a good deal older than her. Also, Lucille Ball demanded Vivan gain weight and look older so she (Lucy) could be the more attractive one.  I hate to say that about Lucy (because I think she's fantastic) but it's true, I've heard/read it for years!

Frawley had a long history in show biz, and like people today, lots of active likes and dislikes. Most accounts say he detested William Demerest (and vice versa), his "replacement" on "My Three Sons".

Yeah they could have picked someone closer to her age. Although William Frawley did an excellent job playing Fred.

Sorry, not true. Vivian Vance even denied it.

Yeah..they really needed that "older grouchy man" type of character for fred not a 30 year old lol.
Yea, I heard the same thing about vivian having to gain weight to look worse and about how she was upset about having a man so much older and will not liking that too. I also saw on some Lucy documentary, I dont know whether William just wasnt into the show or if this is how he does it, but he wouldnt read the rest of the episode in the script of whatever he wasnt in. Most actors would understand what the episode was about and read the script even if they werent in the scene. He didnt, he just did his and didnt know or care what was going on otherwise.

I think it shows what great actors they were, because you never would have known that they didn't like each other from the way they played their roles. I had also heard the thing about Lucy demanding that Vivian Vance gain weight and be made up to look a lot older than Lucy, but I also read that it was not true. Apparently the demands were made in a fake contract Lucy gave to Vivian Vance as a gag at a party for the show.

Well, I saw some "Lucy story" a few years ago I think on CBS with an actress that played Lucy and they showed everything from how she met Ricky to doing to the show, and they had actors playing Ethel and Fred, and they said all these things were true (and other things I mentioned on other threads) and didnt mention any fake contracts...so you could be right meh but IDK.
