A very funny and extremely entertaining episode from start to finish. The cast is (as usual) just plain terrific. Though he is only in the episode for a relatively short time the late George Reeves was excellent. There are many other reasons why this episode works so well. The well written script is one such highlight. It's also great to see actors in cameos before they made it big. The late George O'Hanlon, who went on to become the voice of George Jetson and the late Madge Blake who would soon be known as Bruce Wayne's Aunt Harriet on "Batman" are great in their respective roles. On May 17, 2015 CBS broadcast a colorized version of this episode. The colorization is done extremely well. Yet another reason to see this classic episode of a classic sitcom.moreless
  • Up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's only Lucy in another jam!

This episode had everything! George O'Hanlon would become George Jetson & the woman looking @ the apartment (Madge Blake) would be known as Aunt Harriet on Batman!

Seeing Little Ricky getting his wish to meet Superman was nice for his birthday party. But when Ricky couldn't budge the piano, Little Ricky said to let Superman do it, which he does!

What topped this episode was when that Superman learned that Ricky's been married to Lucy for 15 years, he quips, "And they call me Superman!"moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (8)

    • A colorized version of this episode was broadcast by CBS on May 17, 2015 as part of "The I Love Lucy Superstar Special" which consisted of two newly colorized episodes.  The second episode that was part of the special was the season four episode "LA at Last".

    • Goof: The roof ledge is different than in the episode "Lucy Cries Wolf".

    • The curtains are removed from the living room window to allow better access to the roof.

    • When Superman moves the piano to help Lucy, you can clearly see that there are wheels on the piano.

    • You can see Desi breaks character when George Reeves (AKA Superman) jumps into the living room. Desi points at Superman and shouts out "IT'S SUPERMAN!" while looking out at the audience instead of looking at the little children.

    • In this episode, Lucy said Little Ricky was born at 11:00 in the morning, but in the episode "Lucy Goes to the Hospital," he was clearly born at night! (Ricky was performing at the Tropicana)

    • There was a bar placed into between two cabinets in the kitchen so that George Reeves would be able to swing through the pass through into the living room.

    • Little Ricky turned five in this episode, but based on the series timeline, he should have only turned four.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • (Lucy is out on the ledge dressed as Superman)
Lucy: (talking to some pigeons on the ledge) Sheesh! Sheesh! Go deliver your messages!

    • (Ricky breaking the news that Superman can't appear at Little Ricky's birthday party)
Ricky: I'm sorry, honey, but you shouldn't cross your bridges before they're hatched.
      Lucy: What?
Ricky: You shouldn't burn your chickens behind you!

    • Ethel: (as little Ricky runs by in a Superman costume) Oh boy! There goes Superman!

    • Superman: (To Ricky) Do you mean to say that you've been married to her [Lucy] for fifteen years?
Ricky: (Already in a temper) Yeah, fifteen years!
Superman: (with amused awe) And they call me Superman!

    • Lucy: If I don't get Superman, my name will be "Supermud"!

  • NOTES (6)

    • This episode carries a copyright credit for the use of Superman however George Reeves was not credited for this appearance. He wasn't credited because Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz understood that many audience members/children believed Superman was a real hero.

    • George Reeves at first didn't want to do this episode unless he had his stunt man aide with him, and the director agreed.

    • Keith Thibodeaux says this episode is his favorite.

    • This is the last time we will see Caroline Appleby.

    • If you cover your eyes and listen to Charlie Appleby, you'll hear the voice of George Jetson, he was voiced by George O'Hanlon.

    • Madge Blake (Martha) previously played "Aunt Anastacia" in Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's 1954 film, "The Long, Long, Trailer" and would later become known as Aunt Harriet on Batman.
