I Love Lucy

Season 6 Episode 19

Lucy Does the Tango

Aired Monday 9:00 PM Mar 11, 1957 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • None of the furnishings from the Mertzes New York apartment are seen in the guest house.

    • It would appear that the Ricardos and the Mertzes never learned that friends shouldn't go into business together, as this episode marks the foursome's third business venture. In season two's "Never Do Business With Friends," the Ricardos offer to sell the Mertzes their washer, and in season three, the Ricardos and the Mertzes buy and run a diner together in "The Diner."

  • Quotes

    • Ethel: How do I look?
Lucy: (seeing Ethel's back pockets full of eggs) Well, whatever you do, don't try to walk like Marilyn Monroe.

    • Ethel: You don't expect those hens to lay a bumper crop of eggs overnight!
Lucy: You know, they could if we help them.
Ethel: Lucy, I've never laid an egg in my life and I refuse to start trying now.

    • Lucy: Why couldn't we trade in those baby chicks for some full-grown hens that would start laying eggs right away?
Ethel: Yeah. That way you'd have your profit and you'd have your income.
Fred: Now we're gettin' someplace. I gotta hand it to you, Lucy.
Ricky: Yeah, honey. That's a good idea.
Lucy: Yeah. I've done it again!
      Ricky and Ethel: Again?
Lucy: Don't knock it. Just be glad I did it this once.

  • Notes

    • Lucille Ball ad libbed the bit where the eggs are running down her leg and she shakes them off.

    • The long studio audience laugh was over 1 minute long after it was cut down. It is the biggest laugh that Lucille Ball will ever have in her television career.

    • Song: "Tango"

    • To make sure that their reactions to the eggs breaking is authentic Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance did not rehearse the tango scene with real eggs. The night of the filming was the first time real raw eggs were used.
