Lucy McGillicuddy Ricardo
Fred Hobart Mertz
Stage hand (as Richard J. Reeves)
Right before Ricky sings "We're Having a Baby" Lucy and Desi are so caught up in the emotional moment that one of the crew members has to scream "Sing the baby song!"
Dauncy is a word Bob Carroll Jr.'s mom used to describe how she felt.
If you look carefully at the beginning, Lucy is reading Mcall's Magazine, and "I Love Lucy" is on the cover. Not only that, but the cover is also falling off!
Lucy: (in a daze) Ethel, we're going to have a baby!
Ethel: (excitedly) We are?! Oh, oh isn't that wonderful? I-I never had a baby before. I mean, I've never been let in on it so soon.
Lucy: Let in on it? Why, you knew it even before I did! This whole thing was practically your idea!
Ethel: I wonder if it's gonna be a boy or a girl. Oh, I can't wait to find out whether I'm gonna be a godmother or a godfather!
Ethel: Did the doctor say what it's gonna be?
Lucy: It's gonna be a baby!
Lucy: Gee! Just think, Ethel. I'm gonna be a mother!
Ethel: And I'm gonna be a...I am gonna be something, aren't I?
Ricky: Lucy what do you sit on when I'm not home?
Ricky: You think you know how tough my job is, but believe me, if you traded places with me, you'd be surprised.
Lucy: Believe me, if I traded places with you, you'd be surprised.
Ricky: I'd like you to meet my mother. I mean my wife! My wife!
For these next four episodes, the elevator opening sequence is used.
Because Lucille Ball is overweight due to the pregnancy her left eyelid is partially covering her eye. To keep her eyes wide open, Ball would frequently have a "surprised" look on her face.
Lucy's dinner dress from the last scene was given to Carole Cook, a student of Lucy's during the 1960s.
In the original script when Lucy tells Ricky that she's going to have a baby, Ricky nearly faints with Lucy catching him and then the baby song is played. However due to the emotional reactions of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz this original plan is not used. The cast and crew found it more touching to show the real emotions of the leading stars.
Because of the sensitive/controversial nature of Lucy Ricardo's pregnancy; a priest, rabbi, and a minister were on hand to "bless" each one of the baby related scripts.
Flub: After Ricky finds out that he's going to be a father, he accidentally introduces Lucy as his mother to the nightclub audience, but then quickly corrects himself and introduces her as his wife.
Lucy and Ricky Ricardo's baby was already decided to be a boy when this episode aired.
At the time this episode was filmed, Lucille Ball was already five months pregnant.
In the original script the word pregnant appeared everywhere. Network censors later chose to eliminate the word in favor of expecting.
Music performed on this episode included "The Lady in Red", "Rock-a-Bye Baby", and "We're Having a Baby".
Back in 1952, the network censors wouldn't allow the writers to use the word "pregnant" in any of the episodes. Therefore, the "Lucy" crew had to substitute the word with the phrase "having a baby."
In the song, "We're Having a Baby", Ricky sings, "You'll read it in Winchell's, That we're adding a limb to our family tree." Walter Winchell was a famous gossip columnist who wrote for the New York Daily Mirror from the 1920s to the 1960s.
