EDIT
Lucy's Club Dance
AIRED:
The Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League forms a sextet (with Lucy on sax) as a fundraiser. It's no way to raise money (Ethel likens Lucy's sound to a "moose with a head cold"). Maybe bandleader Ricky can whip them into shape--but first, Lucy has some persuading to do.moreless

  • Lucy and the Little Rascals?

    7.5
Throughout this episode I had the feeling I was watching another show. Then it struck me: the first half feels like a Little Rascals two-reeler. The ladies of the Wednesday Fine Arts League (a title Sparky and Alfalfa would give to one of their clubs, though probably misspelled) need an orchestra for the dance and decide to form one themselves. Cue a scene in which half a dozen people play instruments very badly. In an unusual twist, Lucy is turned down not just by regular show business people, but by bad amateurs as well.

The second half is standard Lucy, with Lucy trying to hide a newspaper article from Ricky. (It also includes one of those horrible scenes in which Ricky treats his wife as a disobedient child, complete with Lucy calling him "sir".) The ending uses a cheap joke of some orchestra men having to dress up as women. The embarrassment of the musicians seems real, especially as they are trotted out individually. They probably didn't expect this when they signed up for the Desi Arnaz Band.moreless
