Ricky's Hawaiian Vacation
AIRED:
Ricky's band is to play in Hawaii-and guess who wants to go also? Lucy's plan: to go on a game show that gives away airline tickets. It calls for some trickery, and Lucy just *might* meet her match in the show's host, Freddie Fillmore, a prankster par excellence.moreless

  • Lucy receives her "just desserts"

This episode has always been a great favorite, thanks in large part to a priceless spoof of a game show at the end. The beginning portion of the show is amusing (this includes Lucy, Fred, and Ethel doing an Hawaiian war dance in costume to impress Ricky). The humor in the middle of the show, where Lucy is forced to disguise herself as an aged relative of Fred and Ethel, strikes me as too broad and contrived. However, all these deficiencies are forgiven as the writers create a slam bang finish. Having gotten wind of his wife's deceptions, Ricky conspires with host Freddie Fillmore to make sure Lucy will have her goose royally cooked on the TV quiz show BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR. The recap provides the details, but suffice to say Lucy is plastered with eggs, coffee, pie, and lots and lots of honey as an unlucky contestant! Lucy's comeuppance is richly deserved--her humiliation is further accentuated as she winds up a loser on the show as well. A funny episode, with plenty of belly laughs to be had in a wild final act.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Frank Nelson (Freddie Fillmore) has guest appearances in ten other episodes. He plays Fillmore twice in season 1, Henry the waiter and Sergeant Nelson in season 2, Dickie Davis in season 3, Ben Benjamin in season 4, a train conductor and customs officer in season 5, and Ralph Ramsey in season 6.

    • In the first season of the series, Lucy appeared on two game shows where Freddie Fillmore was the host ("The Quiz Show" and "Lucy Gets Ricky on the Radio"). In "Ricky's Hawaiian Vacation," Ethel introduces Freddie to Lucy--allegedly for the first time. Why wouldn't Freddie or Lucy have some recollection of the two having met before?

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Ethel: (after the girls have been told that they can't go to Hawaii) Well, that's that.
Lucy: Oh, no it isn't! I'm not giving up so easy.
Ethel: Huh? (looking into Lucy's eyes) Oh, for once I'm glad to see that gleam in your eye!
