Episode Summary

EDIT
Ricky returns home with a $3,500 mink coat that he has rented for an act at the club. Lucy immediately jumps to the conclusion that it's her anniversary present. Lucy is so delighted with her "present" that she eats, sleeps, and even does the dishes wearing the mink. Ricky decides to get the coat back by having Fred dress up as a thief and "steal" it, but before he does, a REAL burglar almost makes off with the coat! When Lucy learns from Ethel of his plan, she decides to teach her hubby a lesson. Buying a cheap imitation mink, she decides to "restyle" it (with a pair of scissors) in full view of Ricky.moreless

  • Ricky's Turn to Scheme

    8.0
Ricky must not be the smartest guy in the world. He knows his wife wants an expensive coat she cannot have, and yet he brings a rented one into the apartment. Naturally, Lucy assumes the coat is for her and says she's happy Ricky remembered their anniversery. Well, at this point Ricky has no choice but to play along and let her believe the coat was for her. Unfortunately, he's been married to Lucy for too long and is starting to think like her. In this episode, it's Ricky and Fred doing most of the scheming. Ricky convinces Fred to enter their apartment as a burgler and steal the coat. In typical "I Love Lucy" fashion, a real burgler shows up the same night!

Another decent episode. It's fun to see Ricky as the one to come up with the schemes once in awhile. And even though Lucy doesn't get to keep the coat, no one can feel too sorry for her because she lied about it being their anniversery (oh yeah, and because they aren't real!). The only question that remains on my mind is how exactly did Fred (entering later as the fake burgler) get a ladder up to the Ricardo's apartment? They don't live near the bottom of the building! Guess the writers have some 'splaining to do.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • This is the first appearance of Ricky's smoking jacket. Later in the season Ricky Ricardo style smoking jackets will be sold to the public.

    • According to this episode, Lucy and Ricky moved into the apartment August 6th, 1948. Meaning that the Ricardos have only lived in their apartment three years. August 6th is Lucille Ball's birthday.

    • Fred uses a ladder to enter the Ricardos' apartment at one point. It must have been a very long ladder considering the Ricardos live on the 4th floor! (Thanks to the I Love Lucy: Season 1 DVD)

  • QUOTES (11)

    • (After Lucy cuts a fake mink coat in front of Ricky and Fred.)
Lucy: Congratulations, Ethel. You're the first woman to ever wear a mink t-shirt.

    • Fred: Have you figured out hot to get the coat away from her?
      Ricky: Yep.
      Fred: How?
Ricky: I'm gonna tell her the truth.
Fred: Gosh, I hadn't thought of that. What about the anniversary?
Ricky: I'll get her a couple of minks and let her raise her own coat.

    • (Lucy keeps pulling on Ethel's apron strings to bring her back.)
      Ethel: Please, I'm not a yo-yo.

    • Ethel: (to Lucy) I'd be happy if a burglar came and didn't take my mink coat.

    • Ricky: Please Mr. Burglar, take our money, take our jewels, but don't take my wife's mink coat. It's worth 35 hundred bucks. (Lucy hits him)
      Burglar: Is that real mink?
Lucy: No, it's mink dyed imitation skunk.

    • Fred: Do you think she'll think he's a phony?
Ricky: Not if you cover your face with a mask.
Fred: That's a good idea. (realizes) Hey, wait a minute.

    • Fred: I'll gather by the look on your face that Lucy is still attached to that coat.
Ricky: I'm beginning to think the coat is attached to Lucy.

    • Fred: How did you ever get an idea like that?
Ricky: It's easy. I think of it in Spanish, and then I translate it into English.

    • Ricky: Forgetting our anniversary. I should have brought her something.
Fred: You brought her something now, brother.

    • Fred: (to Ricky) What are you trying to do? Make a bum out of me?
Ethel: Don't blame that on him. You were a bum before he was born.

    • Ricky: Lucy, my how you've changed.
Fred: It's the new way I'm doing my hair.

  • NOTES (2)

    • There is another scence to the episode that was never shot. It was cut for possibly being to racy for TV.

The scene had Ricky rasing the temperture way up so Lucy would remove the coat.

The script had Lucy wearing nothing but the coat!
