  • In Cuba, a nervous Lucy meets the extended Ricardo family for the first time.

The Ricardos and the Mertzes are flying to Cuba to meet Ricky's family. Lucy is as nervous as can be about meeting her in-laws whereas Little Ricky awaits his extended family with anticipation. Lucy wants to impress Ricky's family, especially his Uncle Alberto, who had hoped Ricky would marry a Cuban girl. Lucy wants to greet the family in Spanish. Upon meeting Uncle Alberto, Lucy gets the Spanish greeting wrong, calling him a big fat pig. She breaks his hat, spills a drink, and ruins his cigars. Things go much better for Little Ricky, who properly speaks Spanish to his relatives and receives Big Ricky's drum from his childhood. The two will go on to play together at the nightclub. Lucy, desperate to reconcile with Uncle Alberto, wants to make up and get him new cigars. Upon selecting the cigars, she leaves her money with Fred and Ethel, who have left the shop. Promising to return with the money, the storekeeper refuses to allow Lucy to leave, causing a struggle and Lucy ruining the cigars. With the police on its way, Uncle Alberto and Ricky enter the cigar store, causing Lucy to slip away and disguise herself as a cigar roller. She draws attention to herself and is discovered when rolling up an absurdly large cigar. At the nightclub, Ricky is officially welcomed home to Havana. Big Ricky and Little Ricky perform together, much to the enjoyment of Lucy and Uncle Alberto, who seem to have forgiven each other after all. This episode provides many laughs and is entertaining, despite the expectation of the likely troubles between Lucy and Uncle Alberto. It may not be one of the best Ricardo-Mertz world travel stories, but it does not fail to provide some quality "I Love Lucy" entertainment.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • After the Ricardos and the Mertzes land in Havana, Cuba, we see an external shot of the hotel where they will be staying, and it is clearly daylight. In the very next scene, however, a few hours have apparently passed; Ricky tells Lucy not to use the word 'días' because night had fallen.

    • A lot of importance seems to be placed on Lucy and Little Ricky speaking Spanish around Ricky's family. When Ricky's family arrives at the hotel, however, much of the dialogue between Ricky and his family is in English.

    • Goof: Uncle Alberto's hat goes through a series of events during the show: it's on and off the table several times in between shots, then it winds up in Ricky's hands, then after he throws the hat back to Alberto, the hat again is on and off the table in between shots, finally, Alberto accidentally smashes the hat, and a few shots later, it's undamaged and brand new.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • (Lucy and the Mertzes are about to go shopping)
Fred: (to Ethel) I'm going to get my other wallet. I left my money in this one.

    • Lucy: (telling the Mertzes about her disastrous evening with Uncle Alberto) Well, I ruined his straw hat, spilled punch on his clothes, crushed his cigars, and called him a big fat pig in Spanish.
Fred: Well, that's pretty bad, even for you.
Lucy: After what I did last night, Cuba may cut off America's sugar supply.

    • Lucy: Well, if the first time I met you, I said awful things, spilled stuff all over you, and acted like a first-class nincompoop, what would you have done?
Ricky: Just what I did. Wait for my clothes to come back from the cleaners and then marry you.

    • Ricky: Uncle Alberto's the one who wanted me to marry a Cu--(stopping himself)
Lucy: What were you saying, dear?
Ricky: Oh, uh, I was saying Uncle Alberto is the one who wanted me to marry a cute red-headed American.
Lucy: You were not. You were saying Uncle Alberto was the one who wanted you to marry a Cuban girl.
Ricky: I didn't say anything of the kind.
Lucy: But you were going to say it.
      Ricky: How do you know?
Lucy: I might not be able to understand what you say when you say it, but before you say it, I can understand what you're going to say perfectly!

    • (Lucy lists Ricky's numerous relatives)
Lucy: (to Ricky) If you ask me, you did not leave the island of Cuba voluntarily. You were squeezed off.

    • Ricky: Ricky, what are you going to say when you meet your grandmother?
      Little Ricky: Buenos días, abuela.
      Ricky: Very good, very good.
Little Ricky: What are you going to say, Mommy?
      Lucy: (distracted) What dear?
Ricky: What are you going to say when you meet my mother?
Lucy: Oh. Uh, bonus dies, maydree.
Ricky: 'Bonus dies, maydree'? (laughing) Honey, it's 'Buenos días, madre.'
Lucy: I don't think that's very nice, making fun of my Spanish.
Ricky: Well, you've been making fun of my English for fifteen years.
Lucy: Well, that's different. Spanish is a foreign language.
Ricky: Well, English is a foreign language to me.
Lucy: Well, the way you speak it, it is to me too.

    • Ethel: Sometimes I wish I'd married a Cuban.
Fred: That makes two of us.
