Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Lucy found her uncased saxophone in an attic chest. Though it had been there long enough for her to "forget about it," she picked it up, and started to play it. However, it should not have been in playable condition: over time, the corks would have dry-rotted, and the reed would have dried out completely, even cracked.

    • Celeron, NY, is right on Chautauqua Lake (where Ricky caught the fish) and is a suburb to the west of Jamestown, NY to which Lucy makes several references as her hometown in later episodes. Jamestown, NY is also Lucille Ball's real hometown.

    • Lucille Ball and the character Lucy Ricardo went to school in Celeron, New York.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Ricky: (on the phone) Hello? Hello? Is Ralph Brady there? Will you please tell him to call Ricky Ricardo when he comes home? Ricky Ricardo. R-I-C-K--. (pause) C, C! Like in 'Cuba.' No, no, no, Cuba. C-U-B-A. B, B! Like in Barracuda...

    • Ricky: (about his tuxedo for the tour) Would you do me a favor and send it to me?
      Lucy: Send it to you?
      Ricky: Yes, please.
Lucy: I wasn't figuring on being here.
Ricky: Oh? You didn't tell me you were planning to go out of town too. You gonna see your mother?
Lucy: No, I was going to visit my husband.

    • Lucy: Oh! I'd forgotten all about this. (pulls out a saxophone)
      Ethel: What?
      Lucy: My saxophone.
      Ethel: Your saxophone?
Lucy: My saxophone! I used to play it in the high school band in Celeron, New York.
Ethel: Oh, no! Not a--not a girl saxophone player in a band!
Lucy: Well, I had a reason. I was dating a football player and the band got to go on trips with the team.
Ethel: I did it the hard way. I played left tackle.

  • NOTES (2)

    • This is the first time that Herb Vigran (Jules) appears with Lucille Ball. Until the late 1960s, they would appear in numerous television episodes together.

    • Lucy did her own saxophone playing for this episode. As a child Ball played the saxophone which was the impetus for the theme of the episode. As Desi puts it: "When the writers asked her if she thought she could play 'Glowworm, Glow,' on a saxophone, she told them, 'Give me a week.' At the end of the week, she could. We could've had Lucy fake playing the xylophone [in the pilot] and the sax, while someone off-camera did it, but it wouldn't have been as funny as Lucy struggling to do it well herself."(Desi Arnaz, A Book, p. 266)
