Lucy McGillicuddy Ricardo
Fred Hobart Mertz
Ethel almost forgets Fred's name when she announces that he won't see her for a week.
Which is it--22 or 25?: There seems to be a discrepancy regarding how long the Mertzes have been married to each other. In the first scene, for example, Ethel suggests that they've been married for 22 years:
Ethel: (after predicting what Fred will do while he completes a crossword puzzle) He hasn't varied five minutes in 22 years.
In the very next scene, however, Fred suggests that they've been married for 25 years:
Fred: (referring to a couple knowing each other like a book after so many years of marriage) It's the same after 25 years, only their cover gets more dog-eared.
The boys and the girls take a break from each other in season four's episode, "In Palm Springs."
We learn in this episode that the Mertzes have been married for 25 years.
As an excuse for Lucy and Ethel to get to go up and visit with Ricky and Fred, Lucy claims to need some of her "good perfume".
Ricky: You two really been living it up, huh?
Ethel: Oh yes! We've been to 21 four times this week. That's 84!
Ricky: You know something, Fred. I hate to admit this, but I'd like to see Lucy tonight.
Fred: I can top that. I'd like to see Ethel.
(After Lucy reads an excerpt from a book dealing with taking a vacation from marriage)
Lucy: Ethel and I are going to spend a week away from you and Fred.
Ricky: You mean I won't see you for a whole week?
Lucy: That's right.
Ethel: And you won't see me for a whole week, Fred.
Fred: Well, I'll make the sacrifice!
Lucy: Our lives have become a stale routine. We do the same thing in the same way. We know each other like a book.
Ricky: Well, honey, that's only normal. After you're married for 11 years, you're supposed to know each other like a book.
Fred: It's the same after 25 years, only their cover gets more dog-eared.
Lucy: Do you all realize we're in a terrible rut?
Ricky: In a rut?
Fred: What are you talkin' about?
Lucy: The four of us have allowed ourselves to deteriorate.
Lucy: We have become stuffy, moldy and musty. We are knee-deep in a pool of stagnation. Now what are we gonna do about it?
Fred: Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm gonna go and take a shower.
Fred: If they'd have been a snake they'd have bit me!
At the time this episode was filmed Lucille Ball was three months pregnant.
My Favorite Husband: Vacation from Marriage
This is the one and only episode in the show's history to give us a glimpse of the Mertz's bedroom. Their bedroom has two beds, flower wallpaper and a sign hanging on the wall that says "Home Sweet Home." However in the episode "First Stop" Ethel states that her and Fred sleep in a double/queen bed.
