  • Very formulaic, with shallow characters. A good example of why this series doesn't hold up well today.

    4.8
Joan is taken in by scam artists that demand money to help her realize her "Hollywood" potential.

This episode is typical of the series, wacky Joan and her sensible husband - and is best compared with the tops of the era - "I Love Lucy". And it doesn't compare well. Joan Davis is decent as the clown, her facial expressions in themselves can be funny. However, everything about this story is script-driven, making all the action almost reactive. Whereas Lucy was a housewife with a rich agenda, Joan is thrust into impossible situations based soley on the whims of the imposed story. It's almost like the viewer doesn't know her at all. The same tends to hold true for Jim Backus, written as a scold but without a lot of motivation on his own.

Therefore, this story bogs down early, Joan is "trapped" by the bait to her vanity, has no success rounding up the money for her screen test from her friends, and eventually gets embroiled in a way-too-long sequence with a chimpanzee. In the end, her judge/husband reveals that her experience was important in apprehending the frauds fleecing money from middle-aged women, but none of this is Joan's idea. In contrast, Lucy wants to meet someone, be someone, do something. Joan simply misinterprets whatever comes her way and muddles through it.moreless
