I Witness Video

Show Summary

Using sensational footage recorded by average people on their video cameras, I Witness Video presented stories of people caught in frightening, unexpected circumstances, disasters, and the like. The show was an inexpensive money-maker for NBC News, its original producer, since it didn't stage re-enactments like Unsolved Mysteries or Rescue 911. (According to one press account, the series generally paid just $50 and $250 to air the individual clips.) It did, however, add thrilling music and narration to enhance the drama of its stories. Quickly, NBC drew criticism for exploiting human tragedy and volence for ratings. The network reacted by backing off on the more horrific stories and trimming some clips of their more extreme moments.
