      • Imus: There's about 800 things we could talk to Senator McCain about, so maybe we should start. Let's -- some of -- the Marine massacre, for lack of a better phrase. What's your -- what do you make of that? What do we know? What do you know, and what do you think?

Sen. John McCain: I don't know a lot. Senator Warner announced, and I agree that we'll have hearings at the right time on it. We need to. It's terrible. There's no excuse for it. You understand the stress and the terrible tensions that these young Marines and soldiers undergo, and it's -- I don't have real good words to say, except that you cannot have such a thing. You cannot excuse it in any way. At the same time, some of it is understandable, but not so understandable that whoever does these things have to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. And we also have to appreciate that it hurts us very, very badly as far as our image is concerned. Some people listening are saying, well, these other people they kill innocent people all the time, and that's true, and they're horrible people. But we can't be horrible people as well. So I hope we all do remember that 99.9 percent of those young people who are over there are honorable, they're patient, they're kind to the Iraqi people, and under the circumstances they're doing a magnificent job.

Imus: By exhibiting this degree of transparency, I naively thought when this thing first broke, well, that's not a bad message to send to the Muslim world. And of course then I came to my senses and realized that they, you know...

Sen. John McCain: It's used so much. We are in a war for the hearts and minds. And if the message spreads throughout the Middle East that Americans are wantonly killing civilians, that obviously hurts us. Just as Abu Ghraib hurt us in that part of the world, in fact the entire world. But, look, you talked to Jack Jacobs about it. I watched while you did. He is more qualified as a Congressional Medal of Honor winner to describe it than I -- than I can, and I thought he described it exactly right. It's inexcusable, and we can't do it. At the same time, we can't lose our support or our respect and admiration and love for these young people who are doing the fighting.
