  • We see a softer side to nary

In this episode of In Plain Sight the following happens. Mary gets a new witness, and the two quickly become friends. It is then that she tells Mary that she is terminally ill. Mary does everything she can for her witness, but as the episode ends we see that she has died, leaving Mary crushed.

Mary's mother comes back in this episode (the character has been cut out of most of the season thus far), and she meets Scott. She then battles with drinking, but luckily Mary comes home in time to stop her. Overall another wonderful episode, which showed a softer side to Mary.moreless
  • One of the top episodes of the season

    9.5
As a season, IPS has been truly horrific so far. All the humour, the sparring and subplots have disappeared. This episode is a saving grace for the writers. However the exec's at the top still need firing or at least a major paycut for the idiotic changes they enforced on the show.

The chemistry between Laura and Mary when making this was perfect and the character Mia being a fantastic foil to Mary's prickly nature. The line (roughly) "This is my twisted version of friendship, do you want it or not? I'll take your silence as Hell yes", as brilliant encapsulation of Mary as a whole. Whilst I didnt like the way a disabled person was used so as to not make the attacking lines on Mia's condition appear so cruel. I appreciated the fact that they put the lines in as there are so many self-serving biggots out there and that needs putting front and centre. The confrontation of Mary and the lawyer brought back memories of a similar scene in Season 2 of Bones; just not as well done.moreless

Laura San Giacomo guest starred here. I am as big of Just Shoot Me (Giacomo's sitcom on NBC from 1997-2003) as anyone, but I would hardly call her a big name guest star, and worthy of solely hyping an episode on her appearance, like USA Network did. The episode was probably the most powerful thus far of the season and told a good story from start to finish that had me interested. It was good to see Mary getting along with someone instead of shouting the rules for Witsec at themm. Definitely one that I am glad I watched, something that I have not been able to say too much this season.moreless

    • Marshall: Patrick, I don't mean to be glib, but if ever there was an opportunity to let go of what your family thinks, it's in Witness Protection, where you'll never see them again.

    • Mary: (voiceover) I can count the witnesses I've admired on a hand and a half. The ones I liked, fewer still. But when it comes to those I was truly friends with, I can't put a number on it. I don't need to. It's just Mia...

    • Mary: (on the phone) Oh, Stan, you made my night. Thank you.
Stan: Don't thank me. Thank Allison Pearson. And I mean that literally. She's expecting your call.
Mary: Ah, victory. Why such a bitter aftertaste?
Stan: Pop a tic tac. And then call her.

    • Mary: I love when you talk to me in greeting card.
Marshall: I'm serious, Mary. That's why you're so lucky to have me. Where you're blind, I see.
Mary: Where I'm smart, you're an idiot.
      Marshall: Symbiosis personified.

    • Mary: (opening voiceover) Friendship, it's been said... is God's way of apologizing for your family. I don't really subscribe to the God part, but if I did, apologizing for family seems like the least He could do.
