In Search of Ancient Ireland

Show Summary

In Search of Ancient Ireland is a factual tour with stunning photography of the land that is rich in mysticism, warfare, romance, and faith. This PBS documentary explores the cultural heritage of Ireland, including uncovered ruins, archaeological finds, modern practices, and lush landscapes. The story spans six thousand years of history. It charts the days in which ideas flowed freely across the water between Europe and the island. Then the Romans landed and conquered the island for Caesar, but it quickly became apparent that the Irish would absorb Rome as much as vice versa. The film follows the story of St. Patrick, reveals the country's conversion to Christianity, and charts the course of the monasteries through the Middle Ages. From the monks comes a great tradition of academic scholarship, but from much deeper and more distant paths come fables and legends about a magical underside of the country. Sort out fact from fiction while enjoying a culture that loves its storytelling.
