Based on true events, the Colony of Roanoke under Sir Walter Raleigh was an English colony with over hundred people in total whom mysteriously disappeared without a trace. The only clue found at the scene were the words "Croatan" carved on a post. However, no bodies were ever found nor any notes to what happens.
The episode attempts to explain what happens but arrives at no definite conclusion. The Spaniards are blamed for the deaths of the colonists but without any bodies no proof is ever brought forth. Then another explanation is given that perhaps Indians killed the colonists in retaliation for the killing of their own. Again, no concrete evidence is given.
It seems that whatever or whoever made the colonists disappear or killed them did a very thorough job of not leaving any evidence behind. Another thing that needs to point out is that the search for the colonists took place about three years under Governor White which is a big gap for a full search.
While Nimoy and the episode pose interesting theories no theory is ever conclusive. It seems obvious to me after watching this that whoever made the colonists had enough time to dispose of the bodies. Since this colony was very loyal to the English it would seem unlikely that nay movement of their own would have been voluntary.moreless
