Sonny Mims is a lifelong resident of Sparta and boyhood friend of Chief Gillespie. Sonny owns a local gun store and is married to Margaret, but dates her cousin Pauline Slade. The sarcasm around the dinner table alluding to Margaret's drinking problem and her cousin's taking advantage of it are subjects of interest. Margaret, as usual, passes out in the living room after dinner, and Sonny and Pauline have the house to themselves. However, the sight of her passed out the living room window is perfect for what they both have in mind. There have been reports of someone discharging firearms from a moving vehicle over the last several nights and the police are still investigating. Sonny and Pauline think the anonymous shooter would make a perfect scapegoat.

The plan works but not for long. With Margaret out of the way at last, he and Pauline can be together at last.

The police arrest Joe Ed Thaxton, who works nights and confesses that a couple of times he had a few too many and drove around firing his gun into the night, but on the night that Margaret was killed he had actually stayed home. This is later verified by a neighbor. This means that Sonny and Pauline don't have their scapegoat anymore. Also, the ballistics don't match. The bullets that killed Margaret didn't come from Joe Ed Thaxton's gun.

Another problem is local paper boy Gilbert Hodges, who claims he saw Sonny riding around on the night Margaret was killed, so Gilbert has to go. Sonny and Pauline (who Virgil calls "that tarantula of a woman") run down Gilbert in the car, there is yet another witness to another crime but by this time the Chief's doubts about his friend have all cleared up as the ballistics match perfectly with one of the guns at Sonny's store.
