Just when you may have thought the show was all about Paul's patients and his relationship with them, the show does something that completely surprises you: focuses on Paul as a patient and Dianne Wiest as Gina Toll, his old therapist from years ago. At first, I didn't really have an opinion towards Paul Weston as a character other than somebody who sat and listened. He didn't have as much of a personality, and over time, the writers slowly included some more information about him to make him interesting. But the events of the first week of patients prove that Paul has his own slew of problems, and the most entertaining part of it all is to see how much of a headcase Paul is compared with his own patients.

He goes to see Gina Toll just to talk with her as a friend but as he is so quick to notice, it quickly descends into a therapeutic discussion between patient and therapist. He begins chastising her the same way his own patients chastised him, and by the end of the episode, Paul Weston has become a deeply complex, jealous and hard-to-interpret character. Is he lying or not? Does he really like Laura, the patient who is in love with him, or is he just deflecting all of his problems on his wife, Kate?

There's a lot of little references throughout the episode to things that happened in the past: we know that Paul and Gina stopped seeing each other because Paul had an anger issue and resented her for some reason. He also, for some reason, did not go to her husband's funeral. Was their a relationship between them or not? There's so much introduced in these first week episodes and it leaves so much for us to learn later in the show. I think that's what I like so much about the show and about this episode in general. There's a lot of set-up, and it's not just boring and expository-filled: it's actually interesting!moreless

    • Paul: If patients could see what I think about them. If they could really see inside my head, they'd head for the hills, believe me. They'd run for cover.

    • Gina: May I say something before we go on? Paul: What about? Kate? Gina: There's a sadness when you talk about her... In your voice. There's something very sad about it.

    • Gina: I always ask myself, 'If they were to diagnose therapists whose marriages fell apart, how many cases of erotic transference would they find?' Paul: What does that mean? Gina: That sometimes erotic transference in therapy is a test of your married life. If a therapist can't handle a situation where his patient falls in love with him, it may indicate some breakdown in his private life.

    • Paul: You know what, Gina? I think this was a mistake, coming here today. I think I'd better leave. Gina: Why? Paul: Because you twist everything into your own preconceived notions.

    • Gina: You should get counseling regarding this Linda. Paul: Laura. Gina: Sorry, Laura. Let's not call it counseling. Let's call it talking. Paul: Laura... Laura is her name. God, you're so caught up in your little theories that you don't even remember her name.

    • Gina: (to Paul) Now I'm totally confused. I mean, did you come here to ask for my guidance? Or to talk to me as a friend? Are you seeking advice from a colleague? What role have you assigned me? I'm trying to figure it out, but I'm failing!
