Good old DS John Bacchus is at it again as he almost compromises a murder investigation because of his own naivety. One day we may meet the wife & daughter who seem unable to provide the young policeman with whatever he needs to lead a satisfying life,as once again John's personal affairs get in the way of what should be an open & shut case.
Bacchus is your archetypal flawed character who goes seeking what he thinks he needs at Rakes nightclub,a deceptively classy but ultimately dodgy establishment where most of this episodes prime suspects come & go.And where young girls, who work as hostesses, are led to believe they have the right stuff.
And what are we to make of the God Squad who hurl abuse at Rakes' patrons as they leave & pass judgement on laws governing abortion & contraception?
There is more to this episode & indeed the entire series than murder most foul.We are also given a Cook's Tour of life & love, misguided or otherwise,in an English provincial city circa 1964.
And at the heart of it all is George Gently,so brilliantly & effortlessly portrayed by Martin Shaw. This show just gets better & better.moreless
