Season Two of 'Inspector George Gently' begins with new opening credits & D.S Bacchus with longer hair but this is as pleasant as it gets in this disturbing & compelling episode so aptly titled 'Gently Among The Innocents'.

A lesser man would have heeded all the warnings & left well alone, but fortunately this is George Gently & he leaves no stone unturned as the discovery of the body of Alfred Peachment uncovers a trail of institutionalised child abuse going back decades.

Ploughing on,with his loyal seargant at his side,Gently defies direct orders from his superiors to uncover the ugly truth about what really happened at Harrison House in the days when it was a children's orphanage & who was responsible for this most dispicable of crimes.

This is a tough episode to watch & light moments are few & far between as George & John, who is slowly starting to mature as an officer under George's guidance, dig deeper into this harrowing case.

Standout performances all round from the scriptwriters to the bit-part players but again it's Martin Shaw who puts in a stellar performance with Lee Ingleby (Bacchus) & Jill Halfpenny (Cora) turning in strong performances as well.

This episode won't leave you smiling but it will leave an indelible impression upon you.moreless
  • the house, that beautiful house

    7.5
This series is great, the early 60' are a time period so close to now and yet so close to WWII. The 2nd season has not dealt with the hangover from WWII (the 1st series was a bit stronger) . But what I really want to talk about the beautiful house that was featured in the episodes. I wont spoil but had I had more of a visceral feeling about the plans to bulldoze the house then the horrible history of events that occurred in the house. would love the dimensions of the hall and kitchen…... and why can't i get all BBC series here in the US? why?moreless
