Using flashbacks to great effect, this remarkable episode charts the machinations of the I.R.A in the early 1960s and its tense & uneasy relationship with the British.George Gently & John Bacchus get caught in the crossfire as a devious & duplicitous Special Branch Officer throws several spanners in the works.

This is one of those episodes that when it gets to the end you're not sure whether you really understood what went on but you are pretty damn impressed all the same, such is the quality of the writing & the acting.

Robert Glenister is supurb as Commander Empton, although I was unnerved by his interrogation techniques but I guess that's the way it was done back then, and Pooky Quesnel puts in a strong performance as Wanda Lane. And Martin Shaw (Gently) & Lee Ingleby (Bacchus) continue their impressive character portrayals which they began so convincingly in the previous episode.

The final scene with George taking John along for a spot of fly-fishing is priceless.moreless
