  • Whilst there are better episodes than this one it rates very high for a major reason. It shows the true feeling that Lewis has for his boss.

An apparent suicide turns into a murder investigation when it's discovered that the dead man would not have been able to kill himself because of his debilitating disease. The plot takes an unexpected turn when the dead mans wife turns out to be someone that Morse had wanted to marry many years earlier. Someone in fact he still has feelings for.
The plot has equals and better in the wonderful series that is Morse, however, it stands out as one where Morse shows that even he has feelings. Further more the excellent relationship between Morse and Lewis is shown in a new light.
The end especially so, when Lewis is shown throwing evidence that would have shown Morses previous love as the murderer. An selfless act by Lewis that is made only to protect the feelings of his boss Morse.
  • A past love of Morse's is the wife of a dead man.

Inspector Morse finds himself investigating the death of Susan's husband. Many years prior Morse had been engaged to marry Susan and he hopes to rekindle the flame.

But what first looks like a suicide, soon turns to murder when Lewis remembers the curtains were drawn when he arrived.

It reveals a family secret of the death of the daughter and granddaughter and what their son-in-law had to do with it all.

It comes down to who really killed the man and who was responsible.

Overall a good episode, although there are much better ones than this one. The ending with the cassette tape was never really explained which is the only flaw.
