The episode begins with Dave sleeping in his bed, tape recorder in hand. There is a scuffle and an unidentified man and woman abduct him. Russell finds his tape recorder and follows him to an abandoned military base. At the base, Dave is put through a series of tests to prove he is not "one of them". His captors release him and tell him that if he leaves he will never know the truth. The male captor shows him the scars he bears on his abdomen that are identical to the scars on the injured air force diver, Paxton.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Deputy Lewis Sirk discovers problems with the body found in the swamp. Sirk says that the body's injuries are inconsistent with the location where they found the body. He tells Sheriff Underlay that he found her birth parents and notified them of her death. He also tells Underlay that he spoke to Mariel about the recovered body. Underlay is visible angered and tells Lewis he had no right to do that. He then asks Lewis to meet him at the cove later that night.
At the abandoned base, Russell rescues Dave and finds out that his captors are not as malevolent as he had thought. The captors introduce themselves as Pria and Healey and warn Dave that he needs to listen to them or "everyone he cares about will die." The four do not trust each other but work together to investigate further. They discover that the alien specimen Russell found inside the alligator has a tentacle, but no digestive system: instead, there is an organ resembling a womb.
Pria and Healey reveal that the creatures have shown up in other coastal villages in Cuba and Venezuela, but with much more dire results. The "changed" people in those areas could not reconcile their new identities and killed themselves along with their loved ones. We also learn that Pria, an archaeologist, was working in Brazil in 2004 when the first hurricane ever recorded to make landfall in the region hit. Pria's husband was separated from her by the storm. When he returned he was different. He could not deal with his new identity less than a week after the hurricane; he set himself on fire, along with their two children. Pria lost her whole family.
At the cove, Lewis and Tom Underlay are looking into the water when a light-being appears. Lewis bends over to touch it when it grabs him, dragging him down into the water. The creature attaches tentacles to Lewis' abdomen, chest, neck, and temples. His eyes close and we do not see him again until the next day.
Tom is about to unlock a double-locked door in his kitchen when Lewis shows up at the Underlay's house the next morning with no recollection of yesterday's events. The sheriff invites him inside and Lewis reveals the miracle that happened the night before – Lewis now has a left arm!
Lewis thinks it is a miracle from God and wants to tell the world. Tom is concerned that this type of publicity might reveal more than he would like about the people in his town and tries to convince the priest to talk him out of spreading the word. The priest agrees to tell Lewis that perhaps this was a personal message, not to be spread. Tom is not satisfied.
At the abandoned base, as Russell and Pria are dissecting the specimen, Dave insists on being allowed outside to go to the bathroom. When they are out there, Pria and Dave talk about whether the changes in people are good or bad when Dave hears a pop. He looks over at Pria who is clutching her shoulder and sees that she has been shot.
While Healey investigates the shooter, Pria reveals that she stole the skeleton from the trunk of Dave's car. She tells Russell and Dave that the skeleton is 10 years old and is the oldest known victim. She tells Dave that she reconstructed the face.
Healey demands that they leave immediately, but Dave wants to look at the reconstruction. He calls Russell over to the box and slowly reveals the reconstructed face – it is that of Tom Underlay.
Lewis and Tom are investigating a supposed poachers' cabin when Tom shows Lewis a chainsaw, tells him that God took his arm to challenge him, and tells him to do what is right. Lewis takes the chainsaw into the cabin and the episode ends with the sounds of a chainsaw and screaming coming from the cabin.
