The series begins with a cargo plane flying through a hurricane, making an unknown drop. As they reach the eye of the storm and make the drop, an explosion of ominous, orange-colored lights come up from the water. The plane is doomed.
In a small Florida town, the residents are preparing for the hurricane. A man named Russell Varon is watching his wife, a reporter named Larkin; report on the storm from Florida City.
At Russell's home, his youngest daughter, Rose, is searching for her missing cat. Rose's older brother, Jesse, is helping prepare for the storm. His new step-uncle, Dave, is telling him that many people think the hurricane is a government cover-up for something.
Mariel, Russell's ex-wife, shows up to check on the kids. She gets into an argument with Russell, who accuses her of not trusting him. Even Jesse yells at her. Later they discover that Rose has gone missing, presumably in search of Carlita, the missing cat. This leads to more arguing and Jesse finally yells at Mariel to go home, that they don't want her there. Hurt, Mariel gives up and leaves.
Rose is wandering around in the woods, in her ongoing search for the cat. Rose looks out at the water and sees a mass of orange lights falling slowly and deliberately into the water. She seems fascinated by the lights but then slips and falls into a large mud puddle. Russ finds her and scoops her up, and takes her back to the truck, where the cat is. The cat had snuck into the truck to escape the storm. Rose tells Russ about the lights, who assumes the lights were, sparks from power lines. He is upset with Rose that she wandered off. Suddenly something collides with the truck and it flips over.
The next morning, the storm has passed and Russ and Rose are lying unconscious but unharmed in the truck. A rescue teams comes and sets them free. They arrive home to find that their home is pretty damaged, but everyone is otherwise fine.
Sheriff Tom Underlay, Mariel's new husband, then arrives and informs them that Mariel never came home and that he hasn't heard from her since she called when she was leaving Russ's house. The sheriff then gets a radio call, informing him that his wife's car has been found.
They go to Mariel's car but there is no sign of her. Believing that she may have tried to seek shelter, they search the nearby woods for Mariel. They eventually find her in the swamp, naked and unconscious.
The sheriff requests that the mayor place the town in quarantine for a few short weeks, and the recovered Mariel supports him. The mayor doesn't say yes but implies that he'll put it under consideration.
Back at Russ's home, Dave his helping patch the roof. Rose tells him about the mysterious lights that she saw, which grabs his interest. He takes her to the swamp so she can show him where she sighted them. Dave finds a piece of metal, most likely from a plane, but then spots something else but doesn't want Rose to see it, so he takes her back.
Dave later returns and finds a skeleton with strange spike things attached to it. He takes it home and shows it to Russell, who wants to take it to the police. Dave insists that the strange state that the skeleton is in could only be due to an EBE (extraterrestrial biological entity). Russell, of course, is extremely skeptical but he agrees to return to the swamp with Dave.
At the swamp, they spot a light under the water. Russ thinks it could be some sort of jellyfish but Dave doesn't buy it. He stupidly leans over to inspect it but it suddenly grabs him and pulls him in. Russ jumps in and manages to save him, but Dave's legs have some gashes on them.
At the Underlay home, Mariel is tucking in Rose. Rose tells her that she's glad she's back and that she was worried about her. Over some very ominous music, Rose says, "Mommy, you smell different.", and Mariel and Tom exchange a long look.
The next morning, Dave is in the hospital. Mariel, who is treating him, says that it was an alligator. When they ask how she can be so sure, she asks what else it could have been with a strange look on her face.
Russell looks outside and sees Tom talking with the priest, who, like Mariel, was found naked a few days before.
The episode ends with Tom and Mariel at the swamp, looking out onto the water. He asks her if she's feeling better. They kiss and he tells her that the first days are the toughest...
