Episode Recap

The episode opens with a dark nighttime scene on the beach at the "Island of Misfit Toys" camp. Christina, the young woman who killed her mother-in-law, watches the tide and longs to return to Homestead. Derek, Kira's former boyfriend, walks up from behind and puts his arms around Christina. Derek says their stay is only temporary. She asks what the big plan is. "Survival." Christina and Derek hold each other in an intimate embrace. Suddenly, a man pushes Derek away. Derek tells Stevie that he has no right to order them around. Stevie says that Zura's rules must be followed. Christina smashes a rock against the back of Stevie's head. She says that no one will tell her what to do anymore. She is leaving the camp.

At the Homestead sheriff's office, Kira tracks down Lewis. She called him ten times that night but he never answered. She knows that her father told Lewis to stay away from her. She says that she almost went into the water that night. Lewis says that it wouldn't be a good idea. Kira longs to be part of the group of "survivors," but Lewis says that the experience "kinda messed me up." She asks Lewis to go to the water with her. He refuses. He gets into the squad car and drives away as Kira screams that he is not her friend.

Russell is standing on the tree platform next to his house. Rose asks if he's looking for monsters. She says she's not afraid of them, as long as they stay in the water. As Russell puts Rose to bed, she says that she misses Mariel.

Russell thinks he should tell Jesse and Rose the truth about Mariel. Larkin suggests that Mariel run tests on herself to find out what the truth really is. Russell is worried that Larkin might become jealous if he tests Mariel at the station. Larkin says it's alright, as long as he comes home to her. Dave adds, with a smile, "And me."

Kira confronts Tom about the mystery of the water. She walks off. At the same time, Mariel is on the phone with Russell. Kira heads to the water by herself and prepares to go in. As she floats on top of the water, she encounters not the lights in the water, but an even more sinister presence—Derek and Christina.

Tom and Lewis are looking for Kira. Kira asks Derek where he's been. She says she was curious about the water. Christina says she will show Kira what "different" means.

Russell is at the station with a specimen of the creature. Mariel comes in for the examination. Russell proposes beginning with blood work. Mariel says that her blood has high levels of hemoglobin, which is why she can stay under water for so long. She thinks Russell is worried there is something inside of her that will harm their children. She admits that she's afraid of what they will find during the exam. Russell wants to compare the tissue of the dead creature with Mariel's.

Christina and Derek bring Kira to a clothing boutique store. Christina begins stealing clothing and putting it in Derek's jacket. After an initial reluctance, Kira participates. Christina reveals that she used to be married, but not anymore. As they walk away, we see a security camera trained on them.

Lewis tells Tom that Kira came to see him last night at the station. Tom says that Kira can't be like them, but he wishes she could. Lewis says that Kira doesn't really know Tom, her father. Tom gets a call from Ellen, the store owner.

Christina and Derek break into a luxurious beachfront home. She tells Kira that she is a friend of the owner. She makes herself at home and makes margaritas. Kira goes into the bathroom to try out the stolen dress. Christina admits to Derek that the house belongs to her former boss. Derek asks if she's always been "this insane." She says that she was completely different after her experience in the water. Mr. Moldiva, the owner of the house, walks in. Christina greets him but he is understandably upset. She approaches him slowly. Kira walks out in her new dress just as Christina plunges a large kitchen knife into Moldiva.

Tom watches the security tape at the clothing boutique. He asks for the tape. Ellen, the store owner, isn't concerned about the merchandise. She is just concerned about Tom's daughter. In the police car, Tom tells Lewis that they have to keep this between them. Tom reveals the existence of the work camp down in the Keys. It's a place for people who have been transformed but haven't quite adapted yet. Lewis asks if Tom sent Christina down there. When Tom says yes, Lewis objects. She was supposed to be turned over to the FBI. Tom tells Lewis "The law does not apply here, Lewis, because there's no precedent for our existence. If I'd allowed that girl to enter the prison system, the world would think that we all behaved like her and we'd be vilified. And I cannot let that happen. I must protect my people."

Christina is still making margaritas, even after she killed Mr. Moldiva. She tells Kira to stay and threatens her with the knife. She needs Kira to prevent Tom from sending her back to the island in the Keys. Christina suddenly drops down in pain. She is experiencing some kind of abdominal cramping. In the bathroom, she lifts up her shirt and looks in the mirror to see the formation of black vein-like features on her abdomen.

At the park ranger station, Russell places Mariel's blood sample in the centrifuge. He says that he is reminded of freshman year at U of M (University of Miami), which is presumably where he first met Mariel. She says that her relationship with Tom is better now, for the moment. Russell sees that the white blood cell count is very high. Mariel notes that the lymphocyte level is high too. She fears that she is sick. She tells Russell that she has felt a pressure in her abdomen. She says that she would order an MRI if she were treating a patient with these results.

Lewis tells Tom that the Red Cross employee who found Christina Conrad after the hurricane said that she was wandering around on the beach near King's Rock at the home of her former employer. Tom thinks she is headed back there. "We all go back to the place we were born, Lewis."

Kira realizes that Derek is a bad influence. Her father was trying to protect her when he sent Derek away. Kira says that Christina is a psychopath. Derek says that after being in the water, he feels like himself, but "more." He has a connection to Christina and feels a need to protect her. As Kira tries to leave, Christina walks out of the bathroom and throws Kira down to the floor. She is going to take Kira to the water.

Russell and Mariel sneak into the hospital to use the MRI machine. The MRI shows a "tumor" in Mariel's abdomen. Russell isn't sure it's cancerous. He isn't even sure if it's a tumor. Mariel says they need to do a biopsy. They use the ultrasound machine to pinpoint the location of the growth. If the tumor is malignant, Mariel wants Russell to take Jesse and Rose and leave Homestead, to protect them. Russell says he will stay because Jesse and Rose will want to stay with her.

Meanwhile, Tom and Lewis arrive at Moldiva's house, 2010 Edgecliff, to find him dead on the floor. Tom knows that Christina's "birth place" must be someplace on the beach. Christina is walking Kira to the water. She wants to see the process of conversion firsthand. Kira remains defiant. She tells Christina, "Even if I'm changed, I don't have to be like you." She walks into the waves. The orange light approaches and a tentacle reaches up to grab her....

Tom approaches Christina and Derek. "Where's my daughter?" He slams Christina onto the trunk of the police car. Both Tom and Christina realize that Tom can't really hurt her. Lewis shouts that he found Kira. Christina doubles over as the abdominal pains come back. She thinks she's pregnant. Tom rushes to Kira's side. She has the tell-tale wounds of the other "survivors."

Russell and Mariel examine the tissue from the growth. Russell sees that it's not cancer; it's eggs. Mariel realizes that this "isn't a tumor. It's like it's some kind of giant ovary."
