  • An interesting episode, it delves into Sakai's personal life.

    9.0
This episode has three distinct plot lines. Rather than a straight forward cooking competition, this episode plunges into Sakai's past and reveals interesting tidbits about the Iron Chef.

Plot # 1: Sakai disappears the night before a battle. It's his 40th anniversary as a chef, and he's been suffering from self doubt. Can he continue to produce high quality food? He's 60 years old and unsure of the time he has left in the kitchen. This self doubt is rare in an Iron Chef, as they are usually portrayed as invincible heroes. In order to combat these doubts, he travels to his childhood home. Here we gain interesting insights into Sakai's youth. It's fascinating to see him picking potatoes and visiting with friends. While these moments re obviously staged for the camera, there is a feeling of sincerity that comes through.

Plot # 2: The challenger is a schoolmate of Sakai's. Although they haven't seen one another in 40 years, their lives have taken strangely parallel tracks. The show makes a huge spectacle of their reunion, but it feels forced and awkward. The only sincere moments come from the crowd observing the battle. Childhood friends and teachers of both men offer comments. These moments add to the battle. We get even more insight into Sakai's youth. He was a quiet child. He was an artist. Etc.

Plot # 3: The battle itself becomes symbolic of Sakai's future. A genuine feeling builds that if Sakai loses, he won't continue. He branches out and tries diverse dishes. He makes a point of stressing that he wants to take his cooking in a new direction (combining Asian and French).

Overall: This episode is slightly different than past episodes. There is character development, not just a straight forward battle.moreless
