An Ironside Community
NBC (ended 2013)

NBC has started preparing itself for the holidays with a nice round of bloody murder. The network has canceled new drama Ironside and new comedy Welcome to the Family before either of them even had a chance to spend Christmas with their families. Or Thanksgiving. Or Halloween. Or even National Nut Day

Ironside abandons the Wednesday-at-10pm slot, where it lasted three episodes. Blair Underwood starred in the remake of the late-'60s/early-'70s crime drama, as Robert Ironside, a tough detective confined to a wheelchair. It's hard to say what went wrong with this series; the numbers were simply dreadful, with the last two episodes barely squeaking past a 1.0 rating in the adult demo.

In its place, NBC will air a plethora of repeats and specials, with Dateline and a Thanksgiving Saturday Night Live special taking over in November and Christmas specials taking over in December.

On Thursdays, Welcome to the Family leaves behind a hole in the network's comedy block at 8:30pm, also after airing just three episodes. The sitcom followed a pair of families, one Hispanic and one white, who were forced to come together after their kids decided to get married following an unplanned pregnancy. The show was terrible, and the ratings were even worse, with the most recent episode notching a 0.8 in the adult demo.

In its place, NBC will air a mixed bag of repeats and specials between now and the end of the year, including a repeat and an original of The Voice, a Saturday Night Live Halloween special, reality competition show The Sing Off, a new episode of Parks and Recreation, and good old American football!

NBC's disastrous Thursdays are in even worse shape than you might think. Two weeks ago, NBC finished seventh on Thursday, behind CBS, the NFL Network, ABC, Fox, Univision, and TBS. But even still, that doesn't mean bad news for Sean Saves the World. The new comedy actually received an order for four more scripts today, according to Deadline. Meanwhile, The Michael J. Fox Show was ordered straight to series right from the beginning, so it's not going anywhere, and NBC is letting Parks and Recreation finish out this season at least.

But with all this carnage, new life grows from its ashes. NBC has scheduled the fifth season of Community for Thursday, January 2 at 8pm (Parks and Recreation will move back to 8:30pm) and the debut of Chicago Fire spin-off Chicago P.D. on Wednesday, January 8 at 10pm.

Below, you'll find an easier-to-read mini schedule of what to expect on NBC Wednesdays and Thursdays between now and the start of 2014.

The pilot episode of Ironsides lost me about 20 minutes in. there was no need for flashbacks. I think they thought they were the next LOST but instead their ideas for a show were lost... They appeared to change the age and race of the lead from the original for no reason. I suspect a wheelchair bound officer today would retire, or at best get stuck behind a desk. Fighting against that was part of the old show as I recall. I think that would have been a better way to open the series than wandering around rooftops.

I get the impression that the only reason NBC broadcast Ironside was to have their own version of Hawaii 5-0.

When I watched the second episode of Ironside, I solved both mysteries before the big reveal. That's a bad sign since I never guess the endings of TV mysteries, and don't even try.

ironside was terrible..i stopped watching when he recognised a murder witness after having sex to a Britney song, because she was wearing a Christina Aguillera t-shirt when she went missing 8 years before and it wasn't even his case...it was all too clean and just boring..

Ironside wasn't that bad, it was just bland, though I think they should have given a few more episodes to see if it could find it's feet, no pun intended.

so sorry to hear that NBC canceled Ironside , but I am not sorry at all about welcome to the family, they should give it at lease a chance like a season then if the rating still down then they should cancel it

I lost faith in NBC a long time ago but what is going on with them lately? When they have gold they bury it so deep the viewers can't find it and thus it get canceled, and when they have sh*t they serve it up for dinner and don't cancel when they should. Regardless of quality, because NBC's terrible choices in pilots is another tangent for a different day, NBC would be doing leaps and bounds better if the execs knew how to schedule their lineup. It's ridiculous that I can look at what's being aired on other networks and know where their shows would better be served to draw not only higher ratings but in the target demos. I feel like all I've done this weekend in different communities is write about NBC's poor scheduling for good shows - it's tiresome and I wish someone there would get a clue.

I liked Ironside. But knowing what ratings it got, I don't blame NBC for canceling it. I blame the people who didn't bother to watch this awesome show.

I actually enjoyed the 1st 2 episode of Ironside. Blair Underwood was great. I do hope he gets another series. Some guys just do not have the luck. The event which he starred in also got cancel even though it was a great series.

I seem to be the only one who watched / liked Ironside. But I only got to see it 3 times before NBC pulled the plug. I'm used to that now...

So that means no new Parks until November 14...That's lame.

I am not surprised NBC cancelled the shows so quickly. They just don't have the patience to give the shows a chance to build an audience or they put up a new show against an established show in a deadly time slot. Like anything has a chance against NCIS. Some of the cancelled shows despite their low ratings were not that bad. I really liked Do No Harm and I had to wait until the summer burn off to catch the remaining episodes. Other shows, I have to admit were not really worth watching. NBC is starving for a hit but they have to find really good shows that can stand out from the crowd with good scripts and good acting and give those shows a time slot that gives them a real chance. It would also help if they changed their premier scheduling so that they either put up their new shows a couple of weeks before the other networks or later when the other shows are in reruns and make a bigger effort to promote them. As for Ironside, the acting was o.k. but it was a procedural and really did not stand out from the crowd, it was very predictable.

Any station that cancels Go On and then finds itself short of shows deserves what they get!! I will never understand the US system of pilots and cancellation though it is strange, how can a show go to series and be cancelled after a couple of weeks seems like a waste of time money and effort because the ones that go early are obviously rubbish and should never have been made.

NBC came in 7th?!? What the hell? Did they air nothing but static? I know they have awful marketing and no idea of what they're doing, but geez, I had no idea it was that bad.

If I were NBC, I'd move Law & Order SVU to the Thursday at 10pm slot permanently, it's not a 9pm show and it has a built-in audience, and NBC sucks at developing hard drama right now. I'd put Michael J Fox at 8pm in the family slot, Parks & Rec at 8:30 since it's fairly clean, Community at 9, and hope for a miracle at 9:30 because Sean Saves the World is not drawing attention at all and needs a revamp if it's to stick around. NBC used to own Thursdays and now they are circling the drain. They dropped the ax on too many sitcoms last season, that's part of the problem, Go On could have filled the gaps here.

How did I end up not picking Ironside on my Dead Pool list? It was so obvious! I think the marketing for Sean Saves the World was so bad it blinded me. I got Welcome to the Family, Lucky 7, and We Are Men right, but Back in the Game and Sean Saves the World (which just got an extension) very wrong.

I had Ironside in my deadpool and removed it at the last minute in favour of Betrayal because I figured NBC could f-up this remake THAT bad after the Prime Suspect fiasco... mmmhhh... wrong again!

Oh, what will be canceled first? Super Fun Night or Betrayal?
I foolishly choose two back-to-back shows on the same night. And while Sean Saves the World definitely won't see season 2, It looks like NBC will need it as filler for the rest of the season.
Reply
Flag
Am guessing Betrayal cause ABC is no longer running Scandal repeats midweek so I reckon they may go to Sunday post-Revenge...
Reply
Flag
Betrayal is running on a "limited" 13-episode season (along with Once Upon a Time in Wonderland) so I'm betting ABC will let it finish since they got nothing else until mid-season. Super Fun Night should hopefully be canceled soon, though!

Flag
Betrayal is my guess, Super Fun Night is cheaper to produce and seems to have some level of faith from the execs keeping it in that primo slot.
Reply

And... Super Fun Night is funny...

It's eating it in the ratings though, it's shedding half its built-in audience, so being funny wouldn't be enough. See "Happy Endings" and "Don't Trust the B____ in Apartment 23" for more examples.

Yeah, some more stuff we should've kept. Oh well, SFN is probably my fifth pick on my dead pool. If I win, I can take my money and retire to an Island somewhere...

Welcome to the Family and Ironside will not be missed, although I do not believe in early cancellations, all new shows deserve at least five to six episodes, anyway that opens my schedule to watch live other shows instead of DVR them. I do not watch re runs so I am out completely from that station at that time slot.

Moral of the story is if there is an even decent show on NBC, WATCH it, odds are if it gets even mediocre ratings they'll keep it! Too bad neither of these shows were decent...2/4 on the death watch..

I really liked welcome to the family. Bad thing about watching a new show you like it and then it's gone. THey probably shouldn't have made the mom pregnant too. That probably hurt the show right there.

NBC's Ironside bit the dust, next they will try a reinvention of Shaft with Robert Downey Jr starring in the titlerole.

As if RDJ would take a role on TV. But if he did it'd probably succeed regardless. Look at Kevin Bacon and "The Following", one of the most ridiculous shows ever put on the air, it's going into season 2! If that show starred Jerry O'Connell it would have been canned 3 eps. in!

I was going to watch Ironside but I backed out and watched Nashville instead Ironside was one of my dead pool picks

Is it really so hard to see what went wrong with Ironside? Did you watch it? The writing was terrible. It's like it was written by people who grew up watching TV and never did any actual reading.
2
Reply
Flag
It was written without passion, nobody was driven to create this show, it was just "product" and so they didn't bother getting writers who cared at all, they were just interested in regurgitating action and cop cliches while hoping the name alone would attract viewers. This is the problem with shows created by committee.

I admit I only saw one ep of Ironside I wasn't sure what station or even time and day it was normally on. But still the one I did see wasn't bad but not great either. I think it'd have been better to have a build up. They had him beating up a suspect in the back of a car first scene and yet no mention of any consequences, just being yelled at that's it. Then did flashbacks but not fully explained one. I mean they'd have been better off showing the flashback as real time then flashfoward to real time. But the first ep showed him, his

fiancé, his partner and his partner's wife. Then in real time tells what happened to the partner and his wife. But never in that ep explain what happened to his fiancé. Did she dump him, was she killed somehow, what? But yeah also having him have his own police squad and allowing him to work in the field is not really believable. Everything I've seen on tv, shows that wheelchair bound cops are stuck in the office behind a desk not chasing suspects, being allowed to beat up one or interview sustpects or visiting crime scenes.

What happened to NBC ? They may need to clean house in upper management or at least hire some young minds. Aside from the brilliant Hannibal and my guilty pleasure Chicago Fire I am losing faith in the old peacock.

I knew Ironside would die the moment the cops shot a hostage instead of the one holding him just because his captor was a woman. Absolutely dreadful.

I'm disappointed in the Michael J. Fox show, especially when you consider his pedigree. It's just not anywhere near as good as his previous two shows. Maybe he should have teamed up with people he worked with before. Both Family Ties and Spin City (which was underrated) were great, smart, and politically themed. The late Gary David Goldberg created both, but Bill Lawrence was also involved in Spin CIty. Maybe it should have revolved around something else. I predict this show will inevitably be cancelled at some point although NBC will give it time.

Michael J Fox Show could be better, but it's got too many characters. It's like they took characters from The Middle, Modern Family, and a few other areas and just dropped them in a blender, spitting them out as an upper-middle-class New York family that we don't really want to watch that much of; and then there's the quirky folks at work too, and none of them gel quite right because Fox's character doesn't do much at work despite there being a ton of potential out of that. When they added Anne Heche, that's when I walked, the "crazy rival" thing was too much for me.

Michael J Fox and the premise have potential, but the "built by committee" feeling to the show does give it a "dead in May" sense about it.
