EDIT
Downhill All the Way (1)
AIRED:
A small boy witnesses a crime, but proves to be an awkward witness due to a mental condition that doctors cannot explain. The murder of political campaign manager Bill Ellis puts the boy in jeopardy when an attempt is made on his life while under the Chief's sole care. In order to capture those responsible, the story is put out that the boy is dead, and that the Chief has retired through a sense of guilt. Putting it about that he has new evidence, he sits back to wait for somebody to make an attempt on his life, whilst spurning the efforts of his friends to help him. It looks as though his attempts to make it look as though he is turning to drunkenness and depression might just be costing him his life.moreless

      • Paolo Amati: What happened here?
Mark: Well you could say the election campaign has just been shot to pieces.

      • Ironside: (to Jerry sitting on his bed and staring into the corner) Hi Jerry. Funny thing corners are more complicated than people think. I haven't really looked at a corner in years. You know I'm glad I came to see you. I'd like you to come visit me Jerry. I told some friends of mine about you and they'd like to meet you. Would you like to come with me and visit them?
        (Jerry nods his head yes.)

      • Ian: Couldn't it have been an accident?
Ironside: No Ian, they wanted to kill him, one crippled cop didn't seem that much of an obstacle. Who's afraid of a crippled cop? You handle his mother for me.
        Ian: Of course.
        Ironside: Where can I change?
Ian: Right here, I'm a doctor, I've seen a naked man before.
Ironside: Your a good friend Ian.
Ian: If I park in a towaway zone, you'll remember that.

      • Commissioner: I don't know how to say this to you, so I'll get right to the point. Flat out without fancy language I think you've been working too hard. How does a vacation sound? Take a month off, relax, two months if you like.
Ironside: Dennis, we've been friends for a long time, you've backed me on some pretty long shots, I want you to go along with me this time.
Commissioner: Well I'm only asking you to take a vacation.
Ironside: You didn't let me finish. I've had it Dennis, I'm resigning.
Commissioner: Take your badge back. I refuse to accept your resignation.
Ironside: You have no choice in the matter. Somewhere in this department there is an information leak and whoever that pipeline feeds has already tried to kill a boy to stop him from talking to us. Now we only have two Aces, they think the boy is dead and they don't know what he might have told me. So we have only one course of action left, we have to get those cards into the game and since I'm the only logical play there, I'm going underground.
Commissioner: Be a cover, if we have to discredit you, nobody will believe us.
Ironside: They might believe I quit because of depression over the death of a child. Ask Mark and Fran and Ed.
Commissioner: Alot of people still won't understand.
Ironside: I'm not thinking of alot of people, I'm thinking of a ten-year-old boy.
Commissioner: I'm thinking about you. It's a cold world out there, you'll be alone, old enemies surface quickly when they smell blood.
Ironside: Dennis my mind is made ...
Commissioner: What about your staff? What happens to them when your gone?
Ironside: That's up to you, whatever, they'll understand.
