      • Mark: Hey! That call, a friend of mine's in jail.
Maria: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
        Mark: He'll need a lawyer.
Maria: I don't practice law, Mark, I teach it.
Mark: Look, he's in trouble and he's scared. Now why don't you just tell him what the best thing to do is, that's all.
        Maria: I'd rather not.
Mark: Why not? You're a lawyer, you know all the rules. Now I'm not asking you to open up an office, I'm just asking you to talk to somebody.
        Maria: You don't understand.
Mark: No, I don't. Now you spend an hour in class talking about a system of agreements that produce justice. Does it all stop just because you close your book, or because the bell rings?
Maria: All right, but just a talk.
        Mark: Just a talk.

      • Maria: Justice in our courts is based on truth, and until all the truth is revealed, real justice cannot be done.
Mark: When do we learn about operating behind the laws and making private deals?
Maria: I'm not sure I understand you, Mr. Sanger.
Mark: When do we learn how to bend the law, and make it work for our own convenience?
Maria: Mr. Sanger, if you have some special question, I would suggest you consult me after class, which is just about now,

      • Mark: (to Maria) Look, I believed everything you said to us about the law, that is, how it should work. And now I see it; it's right under my nose and it smells.

      • Dr. Endor: Yes, I was on duty that night. I would have examined Mr. Wilson.
Ironside: I'd like to know his physical condition when he was brought in by the police.
Dr. Endor: He was the man who was beaten by the fighter, wasn't he?
Mark: Allegedly beaten by the ex-fighter.
        Dr. Endor: What?
Ironside: Legal nitpicking, Doctor. I'll thank you, Counselor, to keep your legalese out of the investigation. It clutters things up.
        Mark: I'm sorry.
        Eve: Factually he's right.
Ironside: Then let him save it for the courtroom, if he ever makes it to one.
