    • (after Mark takes a beating in an alley in a case of mistaken identity)
      Gilbert: Hey, blood, you awake?
Mark: Shuggie, it's Shuggie, did anybody catch up with Shuggie?
      Ironside: I'm afraid not, Mark.
Mark: Mean dude, bull strong, both of them.
Gilbert: Did you get a look at the other cat?
Mark: Just a glimpse, he hit me from behind. Face like a fried rat. I heard a woman screaming. Was there a witness?
Gilbert: Yeah, yeah, there was. She came inside the restaurant screaming about that two men were killing a black cat out in the alley, you know? There weren't any more brothers around so I figured I'd go out a take a look.
      Mark: Girl still there?
Gilbert: Nah, man, I sent her home in a cab. You know, Maylene wanted to stay but... (shrugs)
Mark: Tell her thanks. I'm flat on my back and she looked like a winner.
Gilbert: Oh yeah, you want to see her again?
Mark: Oh yeah, but not tonight.
Fran: Poor baby, it hurts, huh?
Mark: Ask any middle linebacker how he feels Monday morning.

    • Ironside: Well, Mark, you've done as much as you can do. The rest of it's undercover work.
Mark: Yeah, I know, in the Fillmore District where I can blend in like an ant at a Sunday picnic.
Ed: Ants get stepped on, you know.
Mark: Oh, but it's my battle, Don. I mean I know the gangsters, I know the cons, I know the chumps they run on. Reach out your hand full of a little hope and bloodsuckers like the Shepard is right there to grab it.
