EDIT
The Sacrifice
AIRED:
A policeman friend of Ironside is accused of murdering an abortionist. Ironside believes that his friend should not be the prime suspect in the investigation. Other suspects include a shady lawyer, a lying boxer and a barfly, who have just as much motive. Is he really guilty, though, or is the evidence just a little too damning?moreless

  • Is Ironside's old friend a murderer?

Ricardo Montalban (KHAAAAAANNNNNN himself) is a decorated Mexican-American cop who may also be a killer. Mark's eyewitness testimony seems to suggest that he is, but Ironside is reluctant to believe it.

Wow...this was my second episode of "Ironside" after the disappointing and slow moving "Shell Game." But now I am starting to see why this show is so highly regarded. Not only is Raymond Burr terrific (he gets to show off some detective skills, realizing that a woman had been in the apartment because of the perfume, etc.) but the story is much meatier than I would have expected to see on TV in the 1960s. You have racial tensions (black vs. hispanic), abortion...stuff that is thorny today, much less thirty plus years ago.

The theme about sacrifice is interesting - it refers to so many people and their actions over the course of the story. Montalban is terrific (if there's a 60s cop drama he didn't guest on, I don't know what it is) and has some nice scenes with Burr. I like that Ironside is such a curmudgeon...it makes him seem almost like an ancestor of Dr. House! A great episode, and it makes me interested in more of this series.moreless

    • Ironside: Also check out his girlfriend. (lengthy pause) Am I right, fellow detectives?
      Ed: I don't get it.
      Mark: Me neither.
      Ironside: Eve?
Eve: Perfume. A woman was here recently.
Ironside: Enchanteé. 35 dollars an ounce.
Mark: She must be straight from Nob Hill.
Ironside: No, she wears too much of it. Ed, when was the last time you had your shoes shined?
Ed: A few days ago. Why?
Ironside: Polish marks. Probably made by someone who just had a shine. (turns to Mark) No need asking you.

    • Mark: Sgt. Cervantes, does your revolver have a white handle?
      Cervantes: What?
      Mark: Does it?
      Cervantes: You mean like this?
      Mark: Like that.
Ironside: I gave Al that gun when he got his promotion. Get to the point, Mark.
Mark: I know who hit me, Chief. Who was in the room with Gino - Sgt. Al Cervantes.

    • (speaking tenderly to his wife)
Sgt. Al Cervantes: Oh my beautiful little girl. Do you know what you've meant to me; the days you've helped me get through? Do you know how many times my job has shown me the ugliness of life? And then I come home to you and see its beauty. I love you.
