  • Disappointing.

So far this final season has been very interesting because the writers introduced the element of the war coming to its end. Most characters start thinking about their future, if they're not frustrated by the fact that they're still stuck in Burma. The reaction of the men in the first scene, when they see the celebrations of VE-Day, appears very realistic.

But then the episode becomes just silly, with the plot only an excuse for sight gags. Weren't they supposed to be near the front now? How could they spend so much time and effort in building rafts for one short musical number? The fact that the characters are being sacrificed for the good of one joke is most apparent in the treatment of Sergeant Major Williams. This must surely be the only episode in which he enthusiastically helps the men with their musical number.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Gunner Graham, usually referred to by Sergeant Williams as 'Gunner La-di-dah Graham', actually uses the phrase 'La-di-dah' for once.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Sergeant Major Williams: When I had the notification from the Army Cinema Unit, it was either that or The Battleship Potomkin. I didn't feel a lot of Russian sailors having mutinies and shooting officers would have good effect on the men. I can't understand Eisenhower being associated with it.

    • Gloria: Why don't we do the show on water, like they do at Scarborough? I can see it now. The audience will be on the riverbank and we'll be on a raft. And the moon will be shining behind us. And Lofty's voice will come wafting over the water.
      Mackintosh: Aye, with the frogs.
Gloria: And we'll call ourselves the Water Concert Party.
      Graham: Yes, the WCP.

    • Clark: Atlas, what do mermaids do?
Mackintosh: If you're half a fish, there's not a lot you can do.

  • NOTES (1)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Sergeant Major Williams decided not to show the men Battleship Potemkin, the 1925 classic about the 1905 Odessa mutiny. It was directed by Sergei Eisenstein, whom Williams confuses with General Eisenhower.

    • When the Brigadier sees Sergeant Major Williams in black tights, he wonders why he's dressed like Max Wall. Max Wall (Max Lorimer, 1908-1990) was a music hall performer, best known for his Professor Wallofski character.
