It Figures

Show Summary

Three years after ThinkAbout produced their finest hours, AIT began Phase Two of their Skills Essential to Learning Project. The earliest series to emerge from that project was It Figures. It Figures was a 28-part mathematics series for fourth graders. Each introduced real-life situations involving math concepts that can, at times, prove difficult. Often a child would get caught in the problem and not come out successfully, but experience would prove the best teacher. Capsizing the information taught in each program was a cartoon sequence by the same talents who had enlivened Eureka! These cartoons, most often, provided previews of what would follow in the live-action sequence to follow. It Figures was produced in six locations involving seven groups of children. Included were: • In rural New Jersey: Houston Tally, a boy who is just starting to learn the basics • Along the Chesapeake Bay: The Pirates, a fourth-grade club finding out visuals and prediction skills • In urban New Jersey: The Vulcans, also of advanced mathematical knowledge • In Illinois: Schoolkids who are learning and applying the basics of division and fractions • In Los Angeles: Kaylin and Chenetta, whose adventures involve visualizing problems • In South Carolina: The Fourth Street Players, who need to visualize problems to make sense of them • In Las Vegas: Ned and Jessica, avid swimmers in the sunnier part of town The content of It Figures was developed by a consortium of 31 state and provincial education agencies. Managing the project were Ed Cohen and the late Larry Walcoff, who remained true to the code of AIT: Together…serving education. Individual programs were produced by Larry Wood Productions (in the facilities of KLVX in Las Vegas), the Illinois State Board of Education, New Jersey Network (NJN), KLCS in Los Angeles, the defunct Maryland Instructional Television and South Carolina ETV.moreless
