Al's arrested in Lucerne, and is accused of four major thefts in four major cities, while he was in each city. While in custody, Inspector Berman describes the thefts with details, that Al realizes, only someone who has physically pulled off the jobs himself, could only know. So Al "confesses" to the crimes and makes a deal to return the gems. Now, Berman sees that Al knows that "he" did it, so he takes Al to "recover" the gems, planning to kill Al and retire after solving his last case, keeping all the gems he stole for himself.moreless

      • Al: On what charges, Inspector? Berman: Burglary, larceny, breaking and entering, grand theft. Assault. Al: Assault? Berman: Hmm. Al: I resent that.

      • Al: You really thought I took them, didn't you? Noah: No, I didn't. But Berman had built a pretty good case against you. That's why I knew you were innocent. When you're in good form, nobody can get a case against you. Al: Wait a minute. You're the one who put together the case that sent me up to San Jobel Prison. Noah: That's right. Al: Well if nobody could get the evidence against me to send me up, how did you? Noah: I lie a lot. Shall we go?
