An Affair to Remember
AIRED:
Sam is treating a wealthy, attractive patient who has fallen for him. He tries to explain that it is just a typical reaction for a patient to fall in love with their doctor, but she won't hear of it. She invites him out to dinner and reminds him that she always gets every man she has wanted. Meanwhile, Molly is becoming worried that her husband is having an affair because she has found lipstick on his collar, Sam has become ok with her working long hours, and someone hangs up everytime she answers the phone. Caroline tries to curb her fears but Molly is compelled to visit a restaurant to check up on her husband after finding a note in his pocket from a woman named Marcella iniviting him out. Donning a black wig, Molly finagles the table next to theirs and hears her husband tell the woman that he is deeply in love--with his wife. The woman leaves and Sam tries to comfort this strange woman at the table next to his sobbing. He finds that it is his wife, and they kiss.moreless

  • Well-written, well-acted: now that is what I'm talking about!

This is one of the finest episodes of the series centering mainly on the two lead characters, Sam and Molly. Molly becomes concerned when she fears that Sam is having an affair and cannot rid her suspicions. Della Reese as Caroline is particularly on the mark in this episode, delivering her lines to perfection. Duke also shines in this episode, coming across as cute, witty, almost slapstick (restaurant sequence) and really gets it right in this episode. Normally, Crenna is almost indifferent in his role, but this episode gave him warmth and sensitivity and made you leave the tv thinking he wasn't such a bad guy afterall. On a smaller note, Hunt's 2 minutes in this episode were almost a mirror to her "Mad About You" character when she mistakenly thinks she has forgotten her parents anniversary and apologizes, only to be told that it isn't their anniversary. She comes back with "Then why are you making me feel so guilty", and I swear, I have seen this attitude/line somewhere in the Paul-Jamie household. Fun to see Hunt use her craft and build on it years before she became a household name.moreless
