I don't know how this episodes got a 4.0 it's at least a 9. A promising start to this memorable but short loved sitcom.
Jason Bateman who himself was about fifteen years old at the time this show was made shows even at this age he can like a veteran. NBC had a lot of this kind of shows going where the main character of a show was a smart teen like Punky Brewster, then later on with Zack Morris in "Saved By The Bell".
The chemistry with Jason and David Garrison was great. Garrison of course went on to play another lovable neighbor in "Married with Children". Anyways, Matt tries every dirty trick from picking the lock on Norman (so he can't get out), and other things to make wish he never came to live in Van Nuys. Norman, however, isn't a pushover and plays Matt's game better than he can. Eventually throughout the series the rivalry between these two would be the highlight of the show and memorable gags (like when Norman moonlights as a limo driver, is caught by Matthew and basically made to be his slave until Norman turns the tables on him.)
We also get the other characters like the lousy landlord like Mr. Donatelli (Ernie Sabella whose been in tv for a long, long time). There's also Matt's fat friend Eli. The actor playing him went nowhere and it's not hard to see with such a stereotypical role.
Still the pilot sets up a lot of what is to come.moreless
