I watched this show when it first aired because of I liked Finola Hughes on General Hospital. John Dye was an unknown at the time, before Touched By an Angel made his career. Hal Linden was the anchor and showcased some musical talent kept hidden during his Barney Miller days.
I recently pulled my tapes of this show off the shelf to convert them to DVD and was surprised by the number of guest stars that became names, and by the fact that Martha Williamson was a producer of the show, explaining why she knew to tap John Dye on her Touched By an Angel series, and why she even did an homage episode in TBAA in which Hal Linden owns a restaurant/bar.
Some of the guest stars included: George Clooney, Denise Crosby, Hunt Block, John Ashton, Robert Guillaume, Jeff Yagher, Jessica Walter, Michele Greene, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Scott Baio, Patrick Macnee, Mickey Rooney, Cesar Romero, Barbara Babcock, Greg Evigan, Eartha Kitt, Colm Meaney, Shawn Weatherly, and Sheena Easton, who sings "I Will Always Love You" in one episdoe.
The plots were sometimes good, sometimes quirky and sometimes predictable, Most but not all of the storylines were romances.
Hal Linden, Finola Hughes and John Dye are all talented actors. This was a good, solid show that failed to find its audience.
