Episode Summary

EDIT

International tensions mount as Harm, Mac and Bud board an aircraft carrier in the Sea of Japan to investigate the accidental shooting down of a North Korean civilian airline by Navy jets. While negligence on the part of the Navy fliers is indicated, Harm and Mac uncover evidence of a spy aboard the carrier. Meanwhile, the threat of war becomes real when a U.S. salvage vessel is sent to the site to help with the investigation and two North Korean warships threaten to sink it if both U.S. ships don't leave the area immediately.

This episode has the kind of plot twists that people expect from JAG. There are plenty of suspects and theories to be explored before we find out what actually happened. I enjoyed the part where the Captain of the Reprisal gives a motivating speech to his crew and Harm says, \"God, I\'d give anything to be in a Tomcat right now.\" Well, he does get to be in a Tomcat shortly after, but unfortunately he\'s accompanied by a spy with a grenade who is pointing a gun at him. Be careful what you wish for! The only problem I had with this episode is I found the \"beautiful blonde spy girl\" to be somewhat of a cliche.moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • What is the USS Reprisal's hull number? When the JAG team first arrives on the Reprisal, we see the number 59 on the forecastle. Later, when two Tomcats are taking off and the Time to Intercept is 14:15, the number on the flight deck is 88. When the Time to Intercept timer is at 11:50 hours, we see the starboard (right) side of the Reprisal and the number is now 71. Throughout the episode, the ballcaps that the crew wears seem to indicate that the Reprisal's number is 35.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Bud: (referring to the North Koreans) Sir, you don't think they'll retaliate at all, do you?
Harm: What, you mean like, shoot our planes down?
Bud: Yeah, plane or a helicopter...?
Harm: The one that's taking us to the Reprisal?
      Bud: Yes sir.
Harm: I don't think so. Although, to be on the safe side, I'd wear a flak jacket.
Mac: (seeing that Bud looks really worried) Bud, the flak jacket idea? Totally ridiculous.
Bud: (looking relieved) Think so, Major?
      Mac: Oh, absolutely.
      Bud: Yeah, me too.
Mac: You'd do much better sitting on your helmet.

    • Harm: [You're] a traitor, huh?
Alice Tuppany: Oh, I sell information to North Korea, it's treason. The government sells weapons to Iraq, it's foreign policy. It all depends on your point of view.

    • Captain Hubbard (over the intercom): All hands, this is your Captain. You've heard the scuttlebutt. A commercial airliner was shot down by accident. We are investigating the incident. The North Korean Navy is attempting to hinder our investigation. They're trying to scare us off with a show of force. Clearly they are making a big mistake. We will not initiate an attack, but if they fire upon us again, we will defend ourselves using whatever means necessary. This is exactly what we've trained for. Each and every one of us. I know that you will perform well. Good luck, and God bless.
Harm: Man, I'd give anything to be in a Tomcat right now.

    • Captain Houck: Major, executing a mission is like boiling an egg. You don't wake up one day and suddenly do it different.

    • Captain Houck: Captain Ryder was flying the aircraft. He said he didn't fire the missile, that it launched for unexplained reasons.
Mac: Do you believe that, sir?
Captain Houck: I live in a two-choice world, Major. Either I'm a lousy CAG and my pilots lie to me, or I believe them.

    • Harm: How long have you been a spy?
Alice Tuppany: You've been watching too many fifties movies, Commander. I'm not a spy.
Harm: You sell military secrets for money.
      Alice Tuppany: Well, yeah.

    • Admiral Chegwidden: If a Naval officer, pilot or skipper, caused the deaths of those civilians, I expect you to find the evidence to prove it. Is that clear?
Harm: And if he didn't, sir?
Admiral Chegwidden: Then there is a God.

    • Harm: You know, in the eighties the Navy had a TFOA program to explain away incidents like this.
      Mac: TFOA?
      Harm: Things Falling Off Aircraft.

  • NOTES (3)

    • The USS Reprisal will make a later appearance in the season four episode, "Innocence".

    • The footage showing the hull number for the USS Reprisal is 59 -- which is in real-life the USS Forrestal. In June of 1967, while operating within the Vietnam theatre, an tragic fire broke out on the flight deck. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) was serving aboard the Forrestal at that time. The ship was saved due to the bravery & heroism of her crew; however, 132 persons will killed & 62 injured with two more listed missing & presumed dead. The USS Reprisal was commissioned on October 1, 1955 and decommissioned on Sept. 30, 1993.

    • The crew's ballcaps listed the USS Reprisal - CV35. This refers to the Navy's actual carrier with the same name & hull number. In the late-1940's, the hull was 53% completed when it was scrapped in November, 1949. As a result, the ship was never completed or commissioned.
