Episode Summary

EDIT
Blind Side
AIRED:

Harm risks ending the career of his mentor, as well as their friendship, when he investigates a training accident that killed two civilians.

When an F-14 has a mid-air accident and the occupants are forced to eject, a mother and her child are killed on the ground by the falling debris. Mac is assigned to represent the pilot as Harm investigates the cause of the accident and the leader of the training mission, Capt. Hachausen, his former flight instructor and mentor. When Harm's probe reveals that the captain's been covering up problems with his eyesight and the pilot of the plane is covering up for the captain, Harm must decide whether to reveal his findings -- information that would certainly end his mentor's career.

      • Harm: (when Mac tells him suspects her client of stealing evidence) Did I say...?
Bud: (breaking in)I think the Major is right, sir.
        Harm: The fact is...
Bud: See, I think the Captain...
        Harm: Lieutenant!
        Bud: Yes, sir?
Harm: Do you mind if I talk while you interrupt?

      • Lt. Schiparelli: Sir, the captain knows what he's doing.
Harm: Yeah, but can he SEE what he's doing up there?
Lt. Schiparelli: Sir, if you take him out of a plane, he'll die.
Harm: He may die if I don't take him out, and he may take a couple of people with him.

      • (Lt. Schiparelli is driving a Jeep very fast and cutting off other vehicles in the process)
        Harm: Question, Lieutenant!
        Lt. Schiparelli: Shoot, sir!
Harm: What did you do in civilian life anyway?
Lt. Schiparelli: Drove a cab, sir!

      • Harm: You flew into your fifties, right?
Admiral Dawkins: One of the few.
Harm: Did you ever have any problems with your eyesight?
Admiral Dawkins: I didn't , but the base optometrist failed to agree with me.

      • Lt. Schiparelli: Permission to speak freely, sir? This SUCKS.

      • Hochausen: You torpedoed me, Commander.
Harm: We do what we have to do Captain, in combat and in life.
Hochausen: Who fed you that load?
Harm: You did, first time I met you.

      • Harm: (to Hochausen Hey Captain, remember the time you came up in my backseat? Said he wouldn't say anything unless I was screwing up, right? Ten minutes into the flight, I haven't heard anything, I figure I'm acing it right? Suddenly he clobbers me in the back of the helmet with his flight stick. He'd unscrewed it, put a note through it said, 'Plug in your headset.' (Everyone laughs)
Gail Hochausen: I'd wager there was another word between 'your' and 'headset'.

      • Harm: Mac, we played pool tonight, beat the pants off a couple of fliers from El Toro.
Mac: Is that what you do in your spare time, Schiparelli? Hustle Marines?
Lt. Schiparelli: No ma'am, I usually prefer a challenge.

      • Mac: (after a flight with Harm) I apologize for all the flying jokes I've ever made. How many G's WAS that? 12 million?

    • NOTES (1)

    • ALLUSIONS (3)

      • Lt. Gerter's call sign is "Spitfire." This is probably a reference to the fighter planes of the same name that were flown by the RAF during World War II.

      • Lt. Tina Schiparelli is trying to figure out who Harm reminds her of. "He's an actor, he's in that medical drama, what was it called? He did that episode where he had to stick his hand into the patient's chest and massage his heart. I can't remember his name. I had his poster on my wall. It's the eyes." This is a possible reference to Alan Alda and his M*A*S*H alter-ego, Hawkeye Pierce. There was an episode called "O.R." in which Hawkeye had to do open-heart massage on a patient, and he and Harm both have blue eyes.

      • This episode takes place at the Navy's "Fightertown, USA" base: Home of Top Gun. It is now located at Fallon, NV after the Navy returned Miramar to the Marine Corps, and the former home of Top Gun, as seen in the famous movie of the same name.
