Episode Summary

Meg goes under cover as a Marine recruit in order to investigate the mysterious death of a female private in a boot camp. Meanwhile, Harm investigates in the usual way. The training is hard and the facts somehow point at the two drill instructors, SSgt. Carrington and Sgt. Gonzales. But a newspaper clipping found by Lt. Austin changes the situation completely. Locations: Parris Island; Washington D.C.

Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • When a female recruit dies, Harm is sent to investigate while Meg tackles the problem from another angle. Undercover as a boot, Meg must find the murderer in the Marine Corps ranks before the murderer strikes again.moreless

This is one of the few episodes where Meg can be compared favorably with Mac. All too often during the first year Meg is put in the limiting role of a sidekick, or one who acts only in relation to the lead character. This time she goes undercover and puts everything on the line to get to the bottom of a murder investigation. In the meantime she gains the respect of her peers, and proves that she has the right stuff. The episode is jampacked with Marine Corp and Drill Instructor cliches, but this doesn't detract from a good story and convincing acting. Meg will never be Mac, but she proves worthy of the Corps.moreless

"Boot" is defintely my favourite episode from the first season of JAG. Lt. Austin goes undercover at Marine boot camp as a recruit, while Rabb works the case from the outside. The episode is intersting as it explores Marine boot camp from the perspective of a female recruit, while also providing an interesting setting for the investigation. What I personally like best is that its in this episode that Meg finally gets to prove that she's "got what it takes", not only to Harm, but more importantly, to herself. The isn't the most complex, but its an entertaining and exciting watch.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Goof: Another indication that the first season episodes were aired out of order occurs at the beginning of "Boot", when Commander Lindsey comment on Rabb and Austin's defense of the CAG, Captain Boone as well as their actions in Bosnia at that time. Rabb was also promoted during that episode. That episode, titled "Defensive Action", was the thirteenth episode aired, while "Boot" was the tenth episode to air.

    • Goof: Private Schuler is said to have been strangled by a rope on the rappel tower. However, when Private Schuler is shown hanging from the tower in a close-up shot, there is no rope circling her neck; instead it seems to just go over her right shoulder.

    • Goof: Quicksand doesn't really pull you under like it was depicted in this episode. It is actually easier to float in quicksand than it is to float in normal water. One only sinks if one is struggling, and Meg wasn't.

    • Goof: When Meg is cleaning the head, she finds one of the tiles loose, hiding the paper of the murderer. She leaves it open, but not flat on the floor in that scene, periodically while she looks at the paper, the tile switches from that state, to being flat on the floor.

    • Cmdr. Lindsay's comment about "staging jailbreaks in Iraq" is a reference to the previous episode Scimitar.

    • Goof: Harm is wearing the bars of a Lieutenant Commander in this episode but by the next episode he is back to his correct rank of Lieutenant, indicating the episodes were aired out of order.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Meg: I know it wasn't personal. You were just doing your job.
Sgt. Carrington: Yes, ma'am. That's because I thought Private MacIntyre had a future in the military. I just didn't realize how right I was.

    • Sgt. Carrington: We have got a swamp out there that will take you down quicker than your boyfriend!
Pvt. Johnson: If my man's out there, no swamp is gonna stop me.

    • (Sgt. Carrington leads her recruits on a run)
Sgt. Carrington: Pick 'em up and put 'em down!
Marines: Pick 'em up and put 'em down!
Sgt. Carrington: Parris Island's my hometown!
      Marines: Parris Island's my hometown!
Sgt. Carrington: One, two, three, four!
      Marines: One, two, three, four!
Sgt. Carrington: I love the Marine Corps!
Marines: I love the Marine Corps!
Sgt. Carrington: Two, four, six, eight!
      Marines: Two, four, six eight!
Sgt. Carrington: Sissies and wimps are what I hate!
Marines: Sissies and wimps are what I hate!

    • Harm: The doctor said every series or two recuits lose their masks in that exercise.
Meg: It was pulled off. Somebody tried to kill me.
Harm: Meg, inhaling tear gas won't kill you.
Meg: (showing Harm a bruise on her neck) But a choke hold would.

    • Sgt. Carrington: If the Corps expects less from women, that is what the Corps will get.

    • (Sgt. Gonzales deals with a recruit who overslept)
Sgt. Gonzales: Are you taking personal time this morning, Private Whitley?
Whitley: Ma'am, no, ma'am! Uh, the private means yes, ma'am!
Sgt. Gonzales: Which one is it?
      Whitley: Which one what, ma'am?
Sgt. Gonzales: What is your answer; yes, ma'm, or no, ma'am?
Whitley: Ma'am, could you repeat the question, ma'am?
Sgt. Carrington:The question is, do you understand that this is Parris Island, not Hilton Head!? You have exactly thirty seconds to make that rack so tight I can bounce a quarter off it, or I WILL bounce your face off the side of this bulkhead! Do you understand me, or do I need to translate this into IDIOT?

    • Harm: Complaints from recruits who couldn't hack boot are as old as the Navy itself.
