Episode Summary

EDIT
Innocence
AIRED:

Harm and Mac must don their diplomatic hats when they're dispatched to Tokyo to represent an ensign accused of raping a young Japanese girl. Once the trial begins, the disparities between Japanese and American courtroom procedures put Harm at odds with the ensign's Japanese defense attorney, in turn putting US/Japanese relations at an all-time low. When what began as the trial of an ensign turns into a trial of the United States Navy, Harm and Mac realize that in order to defend the ensign from life in a Japanese prison, they must actually solve the rape case on foreign soil.

  • It is better to have loved and lost then never loving at all.

When an ensign is accused of raping a teenage girl in Japan, the JAG team flies to Tokyo to defend him, but gets caught up in strained US- Japanese relations.

Sean Murry, plays Ensign Guitry (he is also Agent McGee on NCIS) who is the accused. When first in the court room Sean looks at the girl and you can tell something is fishy about this case.

Turns out Ensign Guitry was in love with the girl who had a second job as a prostitute to help support her family.

I did enjoy this episode. I am glad Ensign Guitry was not a rapist, and that the girl loved him enough to tell the truth.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The caps worn by sailors on ships, always have the name of the ship, along with the hull number. However, the caps worn by the crew of the USS Reprisal was "CVN-35", where the hull number of the ship they used "69".

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Mr Kitamura: (when Harm tries to interfere with his defense strategy) Don't you understand?! It is the United States Navy, not Ensign Guitry who is on trial here! You just gave them a gift.

    • Admiral Fessenden: A junior officer with a wiggle in his pants is about to compromise fifty years of US-Japanese military cooperation!

    • Admiral Chegwidden: Lt. Commander Rabb. As you know, I've always been open to respectful disagreement. You ever badger me like that again and I'll supervise your ass out of Washington.
      Harm: Yes, sir!

    • Admiral Chegwidden: You have a problem, Commander?
Harm: Well, for the first time it feels like you don't trust us.
Admiral Chegwidden: The issue is not about trust, but responsibility, and I'm taking it.
      Harm: Why, sir?
Admiral Chegwidden: (screaming) Because I can!

  • NOTES (5)

    • Another actor who reappears on NCIS shows up here as well. Muse Watson, who appears in a recurring role as Agent Gibbs' mentor Mike Franks is Admiral Fessenden here.

    • The pavilion where Harm goes to speak privately with Jun Higashimori is the same one that was used by Cmdr Krennick and Lt Austin for a clandestine meeting with a Chinese informant in the first season episode "The Prisoner".

    • Sean Murray (Ensign Guiltry) is JAG creator Donald Bellisario's step-son. Sean's mother and Donald married in 1998. Sean will later return in a new role as the son of a love interest of Admiral Chegwidden in Season five and six. He would also go on to play a core cast member on the JAG spin-off series NCIS, Special Agent Timothy McGee.

    • The actual carrier shown in this episode, hull number 69, is the Navy's Nimitz-class carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was commissioned in 18 October, 1977 and still an active carrier.

    • The sailors caps, listed the Reprisal's Hull as CVN-35, which in real life was not a Nimitz-class carrier, in fact it wasn't ANY carrier. Carrier hull number 35 was going to be named the USS Reprisal, but its construction was halted after it was 53% completed. It was then sold as scrap in 1949.
