Jag-a-thon
AIRED:

Personal rivalries surface in the JAG office when Mac assures Harm that she'll beat him to the finish line in the Jagathon for charity. Harm then sticks his foot in his mouth by giving Mac a six-minute head start in the race. Meanwhile, testosterone levels rise when Gunny and Tiner battle head to head to see who is in the best condition for the race. And, true to form, Lt. Singer starts a betting pool on who will finish the race last, leaving Lt. Roberts feeling crushed when he discovers that his co-workers favor him.

  • The Jag-a-thon. The JAG team competes to gain the opportunity to be the head of JAG for a day. However conflicts arise and a lot of feelings get hurt.

    9.8
What can I say....this is def in my top 10 favorite JAG episodes. Okay I've decided that Lt. Singer is a big jerk.I think that it was good that she cried during the race cuz maybe she realized how big of a jerk she is and why nobody likes her. She places bets on who will finish the Jag-a-thon last and Bud feels bad when he finds out that he is the prime target. I feel bad for Bud especially when he thinks that Harriet bet against him (due to Lt. Singer) even though he has been working out with Sturgis lately. Speaking of Sturgis, he feels that he is not fitting in well at JAG especially when he is yelled at by Mac about Bud. The admiral tells him that he is delusional and that he has no reason to think that he doesn't fit in. Sturgis also feels that Mac and Harm have a "close" relationship that they just won't admit that they have. The main conflict is between Mac and Harm whom bet each other on who will win the race. Harm even gives Mac a 6 minute head start not knowing that Mac and the Admiral have been training for the race. The conflict between the two in this episode was when Harm tries to defend his and Mac's relationship to Sturgis and says that all of Mac's boyfriends are either dead or wish they were. That was harsh and cruel even if Harm was trying to prove his point and didn't know Mac was standing there, he still shouldn't have said it. Tiner and Gunny also bet each other on who will finish the race first. During the race, Tiner and Gunny both "collapse" and don't finish the race. The admiral gets a call from his superior and is ordered to escort his niece around the JAG office and therefore cannot finish the race. Harm catches up from the back and him and Mac tie the race. However, they don't get first place because Sturgis (who ran track and originally was not gonna compete in the race) finishes 4 minutes ahead of them and as his first act of head of JAG, he orders him, Mac, and Harm to find Bud and help him finish the race. I think that it was so nice of Sturgis and a sure way to get on the good sides of the JAG team. Great episode!moreless
  • This ius an awesome episode! It ends with a little room for the dream couple, and a great example of true friendship.

This episode starts out with Harriet creating a Jag-a-thon for charity. Yeah yeah yeah, yatta yatta yatta, okay, we come to a good. See, the girls get a three minute head-start on the guys. After Mac assures she\\\\\\\'ll beat Harm, he comes right back at her, saying that he\\\\\\\'ll give her, and everyone else another three minutes, and still beat her. Throughout the episode, it shifts back and forth from the day of the Jag-a-thon to the day before. At one point during the day before, Harm gets a chance to talk to the Admiral and finds out that Mac has been training with him for the race. He stomps into her office, and without even giving her a chance to speak, shouts out, \\\\\\\"Why didn\\\\\\\'t you tell me you\\\\\\\'ve been training?!?!?\\\\\\\" Back to the Jag-a-thon. About half-way through the race, the Admiral\\\\\\\'s cellphone goes off. Being the Admiral, he answers it, \\\\\\\"Who the hell is this?... Oh. Mr. Secretary...\\\\\\\", and momentarily leaves the race and heads back to the office. All the while, Bud is struggly through the race, but he continues to persist until he runs into Leuitenant Lauren \\\\\\\"Bite-Me\\\\\\\" Singers, who tells him that everyone at the office, including Mac, Harm, and his wife Harriet, were betting on him to finish in last. At that point, he is thoroughly discouraged and stops dead in his tracks. it is asumed by the audience that he stays that way for about an hour or two. Almost at the end of the race, Harm is just about caught up to Mac when a medic stops him. Harriet informs him that many people are worried about his vital signs, and says that he looks really pale. However, he is maybe 50 yards from Mac, and insists that he is fine enough to go on. At the last possible second, he catches up to mac, and they finish in a tie. harriet asked how it went, and when she finds out that they finished together, she responds, \\\\\\\"Well, than I guess you can share second!\\\\\\\" As was expected by most, Commander Sturgis Turner finished in first. While evryone else starts to come in, Harm and Mac get to talking. Sturgis comes up behind them and randomly interjects, \\\\\\\"So are you together or something?\\\\\\\" Mac is obviously apalled. She takes it as an insult to Harm, saying, \\\\\\\"You think Harm would cheat on Renee?\\\\\\\" When she finds out that Renee left Harm, she has to ask, \\\\\\\"So where does that leave us?\\\\\\\" \\\\\\\"Right back at the beggining\\\\\\\", Harm replied. This episode ends with the three of them, alonmg with Harriet, going back on the golf cart to meet Bud. When he asks what they\\\\\\\'re doing there, they reply, \\\\\\\"This is your new support team.\\\\\\\" This was one of the greatest episodes ever, one of the m,ain reasons I watch this show so faithfully. 5 stars, A+++, 10/10!moreless
  • [Spoiler warning] One very special episode that shows just why JAG is an outstanding series.

    9.5
Jag-a-thon is an outstanding episode. For one, it switches forth and back between two consecutive days which leaves us with a tightened line of events. Sometimes, we directly observe the day-2 consequence of a specific day-1 action. Or at least we are led to believe that there's cause and effect.

Putting aside the technique in which this episode is presented, we are witness to some climaxes that have been built for at least ten episodes. With Mic leaving and Renee being freshly engaged to the mortician, there's room for our dream couple again. Alas, Mac is still unaware of the recent split between Harm and Ms. Peterson. To complicate things even more, Harm makes an almost inexcusable faux-pas that seems to tighten the ropes just a little too much. The relief that finally takes hold of the viewers when the two settle their dispute is indescribable. New-found hope is embraced and we are looking forward to future events.

On a side-note, both Harm's old friend Cmdr. Sturgis Turner and Lt. Lauren "Kick-Me" Singer get their share. While the former is finally becoming a "part of our family" (Chegwidden) the latter is going to "be so alone" (Harriet). And to smoothen this episode some more, an interesting case is handled in court.

All in all, this is what JAG is about: friends and ideals. And technically: entertaining and changing cases on the one hand and evolving characters on the other.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Goof: On the finish line, we can clearly see that Mac is wearing red sneakers. Yet, earlier in the episode, when the women start the race and the camera only shows their feet and back, the red sneakers are nowhere to be seen (nor her red shorts).

  • QUOTES (13)

    • Mac: So where does that leave us?
Harm: I don't know, Mac. At the end, I guess.
Mac: How about back at the beginning?

    • Sturgis: Do you two always get this personal?
Mac: (speaking at the same time) Yes.
      Harm: No.
      Sturgis: Or is it me?
Mac: (speaking at the same time) No.
      Harm: Yes.
Sturgis: Look, this is clearly none of my business but don't you think you might want to deal with it?
      Mac: Deal with what?
Sturgis: Whatever is going on here.
Mac: What do you think that is?
      Sturgis: I'm not sure.
Harm: (to Mac) He doesn't know anything.
Sturgis: Is there something to know? Because when I asked you the last time you wouldn't answer me.
Mac: What are you expecting to hear?
Sturgis: Are you two involved with each other?
Mac: That's what this is about? You think that Harm would cheat on Renee?
Sturgis: I'm talking since he split with-- (he realises she doesn't know about it)
      Mac: (to Harm) You split?

    • Admiral Chegwidden: I have some concerns about the Colonel. I was wondering if you might have some insights.
Harm: What sort of concerns, sir?
Admiral Chegwidden: Well, she seems upset.
      Harm: Today in particular?
      Admiral Chegwidden: Yes.
Harm: Well, it might have to do something with me not agreeing to settle on a case.
Admiral Chegwidden: But I'm also getting a sense of hurt--
Harm: Oh, that may also have to do with an indiscreet comment I made, sir.
      Admiral Chegwidden: And anger?
Harm: We were discussing the Jagathon, Admiral.
Admiral Chegwidden: You're responsible for this?
Harm: It's one of those days, I guess. I seem to be pushing her buttons, sir.
Admiral Chegwidden: Commander, can you stop doing that?
      Harm: I am trying, Admiral.

    • Harriet: (to Mac, during the race) Commander Rabb has a message for you. He says, 'Enjoy your lead because it won't be long before you're eating his dust.'

    • Harm: Mac and I are just friends.
      Sturgis: I didn't say you weren't.
      Harm: I know.
Sturgis: Is there some reason to believe otherwise?
      Harm: No.
Sturgis: Because you seem to be suggesting--
      Harm: I'm not suggesting anything.
Sturgis: Were you ever a couple?
      Harm: No!
Sturgis: Did it come up? (Harm remains silent) Harm, are you involved with her?
      Harm: I'm not!
      Sturgis: You're sure?
Harm: Look, anyone who's ever been involved with Mac is either dead or feels like they are.
(The elevator door opens and Mac is standing there)

    • Bud: Obviously you've never seen me run.
      Lt. Singer: Then walk.

    • Harm: What are you gonna do? Not talk to me?
Mac: No, I'm gonna beat you in the race tomorrow.
      (Harm laughs)

    • Victor Galindez (to Jason Tiner): Grab a toothbrush, 'cause when I win you'll be scrubbing every head in the place!

    • Mac: The oldest trick in the book -- characterize the accused as one of them, then ask them to forgive themselves for being human.

    • (Harm walks into Mac's office)
      Harm: You've been training.
      Mac: You don't knock?
      Harm: You played me.
Mac: And you condescended to me.

    • Sturgis: You have to push through the initial point of exhaustion.
Bud: There's more than one, sir?

    • Bud: Commander, what are you doing in last place?
      Harm: Kicking myself!

    • Harriet: (to Lt. Singer) If you would stop kicking everyone on the way to the top, maybe you won't be so alone and we won't have so many bruises.
