"On the 100th anniversary of the United States Navy's first
submarine, we dedicate this episode to the warriors, past
and present, who have always run silent, run deep." So ends a very special episode dedicated to those men and women who served and continue to serve our great country.
"Overdue and Presumed Lost" explores the events leading up to Pearl Harbor and those of us living today. According to the JAG canon, the USN Dolphin encountered the Japanese fleet on its way to attack Pearl Harbor on December 5, 1941 (less than 48 hours before the attack). It successfully radios a code Orange (highest priority for the Secretary of War (previous title for the Secretary of Defense)). This episode explores how the JAG family discovers these facts and what happened to the message.
There are two other sub-plots involving Harm, Mac, and Bud. They are interesting and a welcome relief from (for some) an emotional topic. As someone who had relatives at Pearl during the attack, this episode gives me mixed feelings on the events leading up to December 7, 1941. Only God knows the truth and through his mercy we will resolve in positive light our feelings. In the mean time, episodes like "Overdue and Presumed Lost" honor our fighting men and women of World War II.moreless

Mac: Why don't you try to relax, Bud? I know he's a good kid and you want to win.
Bud: I know that, ma'am. It's just... It's the names. You know, 'Bubble Butt', 'Jelly Belly'... when I was 14, that was me.
Mac: It's not anymore, Bud.
Bud: Inside, ma'am -- it's always who you are. -
(Walking and talking about Harm's assignment to work with the Hill on the JAG budget)
Admiral Chegwidden: And the budget, did you get the 4.3% increase?
Harm: No, Sir.
Admiral Chegwidden: Well, what the hell happened?
Harm: Well, Sir. Renee made a few suggestions and...
Admiral Chegwidden: Renee?!
Harm: Yes, Sir, and I recommended that we add an inflation factor, contingency fund, and a travel allowance and the committee will support an 8.1% increase, Admiral.
Admiral Chegwidden: Nicely done, Commander.
Harm: (Smiling) Ha!
Admiral Chegwidden: Huh! Well from now on, you'll handle our budget request every year. -
Harm: You're going to re-write history.
Admiral Chegwidden: It won't be me, Harm. It'll be those men on the sub. -
Bud: (to PO Potts) This case, it's bigger than you are. Um, metaphorically.
