Rules of Engagement (2)
AIRED:

Unexpectedly, the wily Buxton demands that Harm and Brumby be his lawyers, thereby preventing Harm from testifying against him and forcing the two adversarial lawyers to work together. The contentious trial continues with Mac and Roberts prosecuting, and the pressure is enormous as the U.S. Navy and the Russian government vigilantly follow the trial to ensure that its own agendas are met. Meanwhile, the Navy has its own special plans for the troublesome Buxton.

This episode was a badly needed antidote to earlier JAG episodes which forgave the US government for almost everything it did.

"Rules of Engagement" was to JAG, what "Magnum Force" was to the Dirty Harry franchise.

It made clear that some actions are just plain wrong, and that those responsible for them must not be allowed to get away with murder merely because they are "our own."

The episode was especially relevant given the deeds committed by "our own" at Abu Ghraib.moreless

    • Harm: (after his objections are repeatedly overruled) We're getting killed.
Brumby: Your fault, mate. You saved him.

    • Harm: (when Mac, who recommends X-Man be prosecuted, sits at his table) Why don't you give me the bubonic plague, too, while you're at it?
Mac: Do you want me to eat in my stateroom so the other boys don't get mad at you?

    • Bud: Do you know what they're doing up there, ma'am? They're landing 40,000 pounds of screaming metal onto a tiny speck in the middle of the ocean. That's what Lt. Buxton does for a living. Commander Rabb, too. All I do is look up legal technicalities on a laptop computer.
Mac: Well, would you feel better about it if your computer weighed 40,000 pounds?

    • Lt. "X-Man" Buxton: How many times have we practiced strafing? I could train twenty years, my entire life, to fight in an aircraft, and then retire without ever doing it. What would that make me?
      Harm: Lucky.

    • SecNav: Commander Rabb was there?
Admiral Chegwidden: Apparently he was close by. He was not involved in the action.
SecNav: Well, that'd be a first!

    • Mac: When you got back to the ship, didn't you celebrate with your pilot pals?
Lt. "X-Man" Buxton: Military men celebrate when they kill the enemy, ma'am!
Mac: Or somebody who looks like the enemy!
Lt. "X-Man" Buxton: They were close enough, Colonel!
Mac: No they weren't, Lieutenant. No they weren't.
