James Franco: Hollywood Rebel is the TV Guide series that takes a look at the life and career of James Franco, in preparation for his hosting of the Academy Awards. Franco is an actor, director, screenwriter, author and painter, among many other talents, and was born in Palo Alto, California in 1978. He got his start in acting in high school when he acted in plays, and when he went to UCLA to get an English major, he ended up dropping out after his freshman year to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. He took acting lessons with Robert Carnegie at Playhouse West, and after 15 months of training, he began auditioning. He got a big break in 1999, getting the leading role on Freaks and Geeks, going on to get his first major film role in 2000 with Whatever It Takes. Since then he has come into his own as a film actor, with hits like Spider-Man, Pineapple Express and 127 Hours under his belt. The talented actor is now putting his talents to work in hosting the Academy Awards.
