EDIT
The Music Awards part 2
AIRED:
The Music Awards are fast approaching and Eric and the Misfits are still campaigning for the award. Jerrica and the Holograms no longer care at this point – they just want Deidre, Krissie and Ba Nee to come home. Hopefully, the Haven House Benefit will bring them back before a social worker closes Starlight House. But the runaways are busy trying to help a new friend who’s mixed up with some criminals. Eventually, they meet up with Danse who reunites them with the Holograms.moreless

The second act of The Music Award contains all the ingredients for a stellar episode. With three great songs from The Misfits and the Holograms, a relevant message, strong characterization, and some moments that make one weep with joy, this was one of the series' best. Christy Marx could write them like no other.

Child runaways are an issue even today, so the story has maintained its relevance. Marx introduces Danny, who provides a boy's perspective on runaways. He believes he can take care of himself. However, a cafe waiter provides Danny with advice incredibly progressive and very grounded in reality for an 80s cartoon: You don't have to go home, but you really should talk to someone. Unfortunately, the episode closes before we learn what happens to him. He seems to befriend Rio, and we may assume that he chose to go with Dance to talk to a counselor.

There are beautiful moments of reconciliation when Dierdre, Chrissy, and Bon-Ee return. All of this takes place as the Holograms perform "Friend or Stranger," one of the series' best songs with a meaningful message of altruistic companionship and bonhomie.

There are only a few things that do not work. The social worker is an unbelievable character. He appears as a pseudo-villain eager to shut down Starlight House, and shows no desire to help Jerrica look for the runaways. Also, Danny too easily spots Tech-Rat in the crowd and saves the benefit concert from technical malfunction. But of course, in an era before smart phones, Tech-Rat's behavior would seem strange.

Pizzazz is in rare form as the Misfits promote themselves and finally win the Best New Rock Group award at the music awards ceremony. She plans to shove their award in Jem's face but is overcome by the spectacle of human kindness and love at the Holograms' benefit concert. Although both bands work hard to get the recognition they deserve, the Holograms have something the Misfits do not: a genuine desire to help and improve others' lives not just through good music, but also through acts of compassion.

This episode has aged very well, and I love it just as much as I did back then.moreless
