This is another brilliantly painful episode. While most of the plot is fairlly standard mopping up from the last two episodes (and as Once More With Feeling taught us, that's not easy), it still manages to do some good things.
The exploration with Mister Smith and the horrid things he has to do under god's name is harrowing to see how much he rejects it. I wonder how many evangelicals would be gleeful if god told them to kill people. Then again I guess that's how crazy people are made.
It's worth watching for those scenes alone, seeing poor little Sam Gamgee being forced to do these kind of things so early on in his relationship with the cast. It certainly puts the cards on the table as far as what will/can go on with him.moreless

    • Markus: You both had a long time to think about what to say to each other when and if you had the chance but 15 years apart is still 15 years apart. It'll take him a while to get past the point of "Okay, we found each other. Now what..."
Jeremiah: Markus. You know what, uh, high verbal is?
      Markus: Yeah.
Jeremiah: Good. Saves me the trouble.
Markus: You trying to say I talk too much? 'Cause we could talk about that.

    • Smith: God says, "Look to the east and despair."

    • Markus: (On Valhalla Sector's downfall.) Several thousand people died getting it done. And that's not something you celebrate. That's something you apologise for. (Markus walks away) Mister Smith: (to Kurdy) God says: "It took you people until now to figure that out?"

    • Mister Smith: The next thing I knew, I was awake on the shore. There were people around saying they saw a wave wash me up and just leave me there. Scared the hell out of them. Kurdy: Why, they thought you were dead? Mister Smith: No. Kurdy: So what's so scary about seeing a wave wash somebody ashore? Mister Smith: It was a lake.

    • Mister Smith: I'm just God's sockpuppet, okay, he shoves his hand up my ass and words comes out the other end.

    • Markus: This is where it starts, Erin. We're applying force to the outside world to shape it the way we want it to be. In order to protect it from all the other people who want to use force to shape the world.
Erin: It has to be done. We just need to be sure we're right.
Markus: Ah.And for my next trick, I'll walk on water, heal the lame and turn wine into water.
      Erin: It's water into wine.
      Markus: Yeah. Tomato, tomahto.
