  • Highly informative, and most of all, fun!

In this series, Jeremy Clarkson took the viewers on a trip around the world and showed us what people drive in some places where cars aren't exactly the first thing we think of.

The series had 12 episodes, where he visited a different country each time (actually, he visited the States twice): Cuba, Detroit, Iceland, India, Italy, Japan, Monaco, Vietnam, Australia, Dubai, Switzerland, Texas.

One of my favorite moments came from Detroit, where in one segment, he spoke of how many American cars are gas guzzlers with very soft suspension (which was especially true back in 1995, when the series was made). The part had him sitting in a Crown Victoria or something like it at an abandoned gas station ("we just filled the tank and look what happened!") and he demonstrated the floaty suspension. He turned on the car, put his foot to the floor for a second, slammed on the brakes, and the car rocked...and rocked...and rocked. Looked like he was in a boat! (someone was off-camera pushing up and down on the bumper as he continued talking for another half minute) I laughed so hard at that!

The series is full of light-hearted moments like that and makes for a very fun viewing. It is also highly informative as he speaks not only of what the people in the various places drive, but why (or why not) they do so. Outside influences are also discussed, showing why certain places drive certain things. There is also some breathtaking scenery from some of the more exotic locales.

For anyone who likes cars and a good laugh, this will be the most entertaining travelogue you'll ever see!moreless
  • A cultural travel log show from the perspective of how people use cars in different countries.

Jeremy Clarkson (best know for his role in Top Gear) goes round the world to see how different cultures have integratet the automobile into their culture. In the process we get to meet very interesting people with a great variety of unexcpected ideas about life.

At first I thought the premise a bit limiting, then I watched an episode. I can't tell what order the episodes were originally aired, so I started with teh episode on Texas. Jeremy managed to find the most unusual people doing the most odd things with cars, and I was hooked.

It is not really a show about driving. It is about how the auto has been used as an artistic statement, a political statement, a religious statement of just for fun or entertainment.

For example, the show on cars in Iceland both made me marvel at what they used cars for, and what the people of Iceland were like and what some of them valued. It also made me want to go there!

I am not sure if this show is no the are any were at all right now. You can find the show in downloadable form on the internet. However you may come accross an episode, give it a try. I think you will be surprised.moreless
