In this episode it's revealed Johnston Green is a retired army Ranger. In "Crossroads" we learned that Johnston's father (Jake's grandfather) was an army ranger at D-day. This makes being an army ranger a family legacy. Jake is seen wearing dog tags in an earlier episode. Was he too an army ranger?
The Morse Code Message heard over the title is:
There are six capital cities in the United States representing the Federal Government. There are five additional "Presidents" bringing a total of six people claiming to have power in the United States.
Johnston (listening to Gray speak to the town): There's a way of doing this without scaring the crap out of everybody.
Gail: He was elected. Means he's gonna do it his way.
Johnston: Ahhh, I'm gonna need a hobby.
Jake (looking at map): Federal government? But, there are six stars up there. Where's the president?
Mike: Which one?
Gail: To be honest, I have difficulty understanding how many ways I dislike you. (picks up paper)
Mary: You made a list?
(Later Mary finds that piece of paper and reads the following: "Be nice. She's going to be family someday.")
Samuel: Dad, we're out of the good toothpaste.
Hawkins: Oh, well here's the new stuff Mr. Daly made. (hands him baggie filled with powder)
Samuel: This isn't toothpaste.
Hawkins: Yes, it is.
Samuel: Are you playing a joke on me?
Heather (to Jake): I shouldn't have sprung this on you. This is too weird.
Jake: What? What's weird?
Heather: Okay...I kissed you...a month ago. We haven't spoken since. Generally people speak after something like that.
Johnston: I'm just gonna...you know...uh... (walks away)
Jake: Did you ask Mom?
Johnston: Son, I'm 59 years old. I was Mayor of this town since the Carter Administration. I'm a retired U.S. Army Ranger and a combat veteran. Of course I asked your mother.
Robert: You just punched me in the face and I didn't hit you back
Sarah: Who else is here?
Robert: No one. Victor showed up just after D-day, but he only made it for a couple of hours.
Sarah: Did you kill him?
Robert: It was the radiation from Denver.
Sarah: No one else made it back here to the rally point.
Robert: I'm glad you made it.
Sarah: You left me.
Robert: I know.
Sarah: So, what now?
Mary: Mrs. Green.
Mary: Eric told me that April's pregnant. If there's anything that I could..
Gail: Mary, I think you've done quite enough.
Heather: I'm coming too.
Jake: Not a chance in hell.
Heather: Would you know a working mechanical governor for a wind turbine if you saw one.
Jake: Yes. (Heather tilts her head in disapproval at Jake) No, I'm not taking passengers out there, no, no, no.
Stranger: Hey, how much?
Heather: Beg pardon?
Stranger: How much?
Heather: How much for what?
Stranger: I don't know, an hour?
Heather: An hour of what? Wait, what, no!!
Stranger: How about a half hour?
Heather: I'm not a hooker pal.
Heather: You know why things didn't work out between us? I'm not dangerous. I'm crossword puzzles and flannel pajamas and the occasional light beer. I was never gonna be hazardous to you. That's how you tick.
Jake: No it isn't.
Heather: Of course it is but it's okay. If it wasn't your dad would probably be dead right now. You and I would've never met on that bus. So I'm taking a page out of your book, I'm throwing caution to the wind. I'm gonna help turn the lights on for everyone back home.
Jake: Just for a few days.
Heather: You worried about me?
Jake: Come back in one piece.
(Jake hugs Heather)
(Jake pulls a blanket off of a dead Joe Bitner)
Jimmy: The temperature dropped so fast.
Jake: It's gonna be a long winter.

AT&T, Jericho's biggest sponsor, has a new smart-phone called "Black Jack," which may be tied to the episode title.
Bleeding KS, the Morse code at the beginning of "Black Jack", along with the reports under the big US map concerning the killings on nearby highways, refers to the murder, mayhem and destruction in Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri between 1854 and 1861.
At the Black Jack trading post, just before Jake, Johnston, Dale and Heather read the gigantic news board, off to their left in the background are bulletin boards with photos and messages of people who are presumably missing since the bombings. This is similar to the boards posted by families of the 9-11 World Trade Center attack.
James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. (born October 1, 1924) was the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981
Johnston: Son, I'm 59 years old. I've been Mayor of this town since the Carter Administration. Mayor Green was the Mayor from at least 1981 to Jericho present.
Dale: It's like eBay. (A man gets hit with a stick)
Heather: Not like eBay.
eBay Inc. (EBAY) is an American Internet company that manages eBay.com, an online auction and shopping website where people and businesses buy and sell goods and services worldwide.
The episode name "Black Jack", along with the preview clip featuring a hanged criminal, may be a reference to the 1901 hanging of Tom "Black Jack" Ketchum. His hanging is remembered more than most because his head snapped off due to an inexperienced hang man.
